SAFETY UNIT GOALS:
1) Learn ways to protect your health by
following basic safety procedures.

2)Demonstrate proper
emergency situation
protocol.
You walk into a room and a
person is not moving and lying
face down; what do you do?
You are the 1st in the room, but
there are some people nearby.
Write down the step by step
what you would do in this
situation.
Semester Test Day Learning Goals
• 1) Demonstrate proper emergency situation
protocol, including how to perform CPR.
• 2) Demonstrate how to perform the Heimlich
to aid a choking victim.
• 3) Identify the danger of marijuana.
• 4) Evaluate the three most important safety
habits for you.
CPR
• 1) Try to wake victim.
• 2) If victim won’t wake-up, check for pulse.
• **Practice finding pulse on yourself then
with partner.
• 3) If no pulse, call 911
• 4) Start chest compressions by putting
hand directly on the center of the chest,
between the nipples. Push down about 1.5
inches at a rate of 100/minute “Staying
alive” beat.
How to respond in an emergency situation:
•
•
•
•

1) Stay calm
**Check surrounding for danger.
2) One person take charge.
3) Designate one person to call 911. This
person stays on the phone with 911, until
emergency personnel arrive at the scene.
• 4) Establish that the person is nonresponsive.
• 5) Start chest compressions
• 6) Use AED.
Scenario 2:
• A person is choking, how would you
respond? Write you steps of your
response!
Heimlich
• To be used to dislodge food or another object from a
person’s airway when a person is choking.
• 1) Make sure person is choking (hands around neck, can’t
breathe or speak)
• 2) Tell the victim you are going to help them.
• 3) Get victim in standing position.
• 4) Perform back blows-heel of one hand between the
victim’s shoulder blades.
• 5) No change, then get behind the victim, circle you hands
around the victim’s stomach, make a fist with your
dominant hand-right above victim’s navel (belly button).
• 6) Pull inward and upward with quick upward thrustsuse good force. 5 thrusts right after one another. Continue
until object is expelled. Stop if victim falls unconscious.
Top 5 Causes of death for U.S.
teenagers
•
•
•
•
•
•
•

1) Accidents-48%.
*73% of accidents are car crashes.
2) Homicide- 13%
3) Suicide- 11%
4) Cancer 6%
5) Heart disease 3%
^^Teenager deaths account for less than
1% of all deaths that occur every year in
the U.S.
Most important teenager safety habits:
• *Since car accidents account for 36% of all United States
teenager deaths, finding ways to reduce likelihood of
being in a fatal car crash is key.
• 1) Eliminate distracted driving (texting being the biggest
threat, but also other teens in car-this is the reason for
graduated driver’s license laws). Talking on phone
increases accidents by 400%, texting while driving
increases risk of accident by 1600%.
• 2) Don’t drink alcohol and drive and don’t ride with
someone who has been drinking.
• 3) Wear seatbelt at ALL times (60% of all fatal car
accidents were because of not wearing seatbelt).
Wearing a seatbelt reduces your chance of being killed
or seriously injured in a car accident by 50%. Less likely
to wear seatbelt after drinking.
Marijuana article reflections:
• 1) Read the article, “Chronic marijuana use may
alter brain structure-study finds.”
• 2) According to this article, chronic marijuana use
was associated with ________________ (put in
own words).
• 3) Explain what schizophrenia is (the article
compared the brain of chronic marijuana smokers
to schizophrenia patients).
• 4) How old were the people involved in this study
(hint the correct answer is NOT 16 or 17 years
old.)
• **Graduated driver’s license reduces deaths by
38%.
• In Kearney, Ne homicide is not an issue we
need to address, but unfortunately, suicide is
an issue we need to be aware of.
• REDUCING SUICIDE:
• Take every threat serious.
• Warning signs: give away possessions, talk about
death, saying “wish I were dead”, substance abuse,
depressed, isolate themselves, and feelings of
hopelessness.
• Tell adult and person should get psychological care.

What can you do to increase your
safety?
• *Take 45 seconds to think of what YOU can
do to increase the safety of yourself and your
friends.
• Come up with a group list, write this list down.
• Order your list with the most important items
first.
Top Causes of death for United States
Teenagers:
• 1) On the index card, copy the title (what
is typed in white.) and number your paper
1-5.
• 2) Individually, make your best guess of
the top 5 causes of death for U.S.
teenagers by filling out your paper.
• 3) In your group, give and get your
answers. Change your answers as
needed.
Good morning!
• LEARNING GOAL: Accurately selfassess your current level of fitness.
• BELL RINGER:
• Reflect back on this semester in health
and come up with ONE specific thing
you learned. Be ready to share this
learning with the class.
