Healthcare. It’s just one word, but it feels like over a hundred problems and potential solutions spun up like a spider web — benefits, cost savings and improvements are stuck together without being truly connected.
Health plans must systematically engage with providers to ensure better cost, care, quality, and revenue outcomes. Improved provider engagement enables interactive closure of care gaps and allows providers to proactively improve payer quality scores.
As is the case with many industries, the use of technology has replaced in-person interaction within the medical field. While the US deploys almost 80,000 pharmaceutical Medical Representatives (MRs), that number has decreased 12% since last year. Call centers, tablets, and electronic, web-based product detailing are meeting the needs of these now-eliminated positions. In the US, all top 20 pharma companies use e-detailing. Short powerpoint supporting the story around the three Mergers & Acquisitions where I was personally involved, either as an object or a subject. IBM & Lotus in 1995, Microsoft & Navision in 2002 and Real Software & Dolmen towards RealDolmen in 2007. The stories are more important than the pictures but herewith the visuals around the three M&A's that I experienced or initiated personally during my 25 year career in ICT. $100Bn Public Health Problem–Poor Medication Adherence– David Parpart's ResearchDavid Parpart, D.C.
This is my master deck of over 100 slides related to $290 billion public health problem– poor medication adherence. My research concluded in 2017. The slide were are from the perspective various stakeholders– patients, pharmacies, drug manufacturers, Medicare and employers. If you find the research useful and are working to address aspects of poor adherence, please contact me.
I compiled the research while working with the American Pharmacist Association (APhA), regional pharmacy chains and medical specialists to launch a comprehensive solution to address the problems associated with poor medication adherence. Pharmacist-led counseling was the most effect solution studied at the time.
I cited public health data including losses to the various stakeholders. Patients lose, but so do insurers, employers , and sellers. In the US the 3 previous mentioned stakeholder are losing upwards of $100 billion annually.
I'm giving a presentation on 9/19/13 to 3 CBI conferences - Point of Care Summit, Retail Strategy Summit, and Strategic Distribution Planning for Specialty. The topic is how retail pharmacy can serve as the Digital Patient Home in the future. This highlights the emerging opportunity, what some companies are doing, and some of the emerging technology and trends.
The Evolution of Consumer Driven Health PlansPaladina Health
The Evolution of Consumer Driven Health Plans White Paper will prepare you for the following regarding the shift to true healthcare consumerism:
- What types of employer-sponsored health plans exist and what employers should consider
- The impact of consumer driven health plans (CDHPs) and high deductible health plans (HDHPs) in controlling healthcare costs
- What models challenge the fee-for-service delivery system and why employers need to explore them
Patient-centered pharmacovigilance represents a pivotal shift in the landscape of healthcare, emphasizing the active involvement of patients in the monitoring and reporting of adverse drug reactions. Unlike traditional pharmacovigilance, which primarily relies on healthcare professionals to identify and document adverse events, this approach recognizes patients as critical stakeholders in ensuring medication safety. By empowering patients to share their experiences, concerns, and observations regarding medication effects, whether positive or negative, healthcare systems can gain a comprehensive understanding of drug safety and efficacy in real-world settings. Patient-centered pharmacovigilance fosters a collaborative partnership between patients, healthcare providers, and regulatory agencies, promoting transparency, accountability, and ultimately, better patient outcomes. Through increased patient engagement and the utilization of patient-reported data, this approach enables healthcare systems to identify potential safety issues earlier, tailor treatment strategies to individual needs, and enhance overall drug safety surveillance efforts.
What the Shift to Value Means for PharmaceuticalsMedullan
With the transition to value, payers are insisting that pharmaceutical manufacturers deliver real world evidence of their drug’s efficacy before being allowed on formulary. The cost of new specialty treatments has forced companies to bolster and go beyond clinical trial, proving that their drugs improve health outcomes and reduce the cost of care in actual use. Gathering and compiling the myriad of needed data points requires a digital strategy that connects patients, providers, and payers. These comprehensive digital technology platforms are also effective tools for delivering competitive differentiation, better speed to market, and a source for new and expanded revenues.

Editor's Notes
Have you ever gone to the doctor and pharmacy and someone asks you later, “What did they say?” and you honestly don’t know? The result is people take medications incorrectly.
Taking medications incorrectlycauses $188 billion in lost drug sales for pharmacies and manufacturers, $290 billion dollars in annual losses for insurers and 100 billion dollars in unnecessary hospital visits.
total US pharmaceutical revenues for Diabetes totaled about $20Bn with $17.6Bn in chronic meds like insulin. Considering an estimated mean adherence rate of 60% across medications, the estimate of revenue lost in this therapeutic area is $11.4 billion or 58% of total revenue.Estimated Annual Pharmaceutical Revenue LossDue to Medication Non-Adherence

Imagine that, instead of just receiving a medication prescription from your physician, you receive a prescription for a medication plus a service.
In fact, 24 month retention rates on medications for chronic diseases are 33 percent.
