Exams are scheduled two weeks in advance and students must arrive 10 minutes early. Exams cannot be rescheduled for other commitments and missing an exam without a valid reason will result in a zero. Students with additional learning needs must register with support services in advance. Results are released within 10 days of boards approving them and students should check that their contact details are up to date. Students who fail assessments can resit exams in August or resubmit coursework, and referred results are considered in September.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

INFORMATION SHEETS
Notification and timing of exams
The College’s Exams Team co-ordinate all examinations. Notifications of examinations that are due to take place
are normally issued two weeks prior to the exam by letter and/or College email. Please retain this letter/email
as you will need it to enter the examination. You should also double check the date via the College’s Pro-Portal
system, time and location to ensure you know where to go on the day and receive notification of any changes to
your exam. Please try and arrive at least 10 minutes early for your examination to ensure it can start on time.
What happens if I cannot attend an exam?
Exams cannot be rescheduled to any other date. If you have other commitments on the day of a confirmed exam
your exam date cannot not be moved. If you fail to attend an exam you will be marked as not attending and will
receive a mark of zero. However, if miss an exam due to extenuating circumstances (something that happened
that was outside of your control) you must notify your Programme Manager or the HE Quality Team at the earliest
possible opportunity. You will be asked to complete a form providing information about the circumstances that
affected you and to provide original evidence of the circumstance. If your circumstances are deemed to be valid
then you may be offered the chance to sit the exam without any penalty being incurred during the summer.

Additional support
It is important you notify the College well in advance of your exam if you think you have any additional learning
needs. Learning support can only be provided if you have received a valid needs assessment that has been
approved so you can access the Disabled Students Allowance (DSA). The DSA then provides the means to put
in place the support you need. Ideally learning support needs should be flagged at the start of the year to the
Additional Learning Support (ALS) Team, you can contact them by emailing learning.support@bridgwater.ac.uk
End of year results for exams and other assessed work
Results are not final (including those from your assessed coursework) until they have been through and approved
by an Examination or Assessment Board process. Results are released within a set timeframe following the date of
the Examination or Assessment Board. The HE Quality Team can advise on the timescales as they vary between
different university partners, however it is normally around 10 working days from the date of the Board. Results
are issued in varying formats depending on who is responsible for releasing them. It is therefore important that
your current address and email address are up to date with both the College and your university partner. It is
also important that you know how to access online portals such as Blackboard or a university equivalent should
your results be released through that method. If you are unsure you can contact the HE Quality Team on HE@
bridgwater.ac.uk or ask your Programme Manager. Once you receive your results please ensure you read and
check them carefully, any queries about them should be communicated immediately to the HE Quality Team by
email on HE@bridgwater.ac.uk as there is only normally a short window in which any concerns can be addressed.
Process in the event of failure or referral
If you fail to pass an exam or another element of your assessed work you may be offered the chance to resit or
resubmit it this is because you must (normally) pass all of your current year’s assessments before you can progress
onto the next academic year and/or level of study. All arrangements will be confirmed to you in writing when
your results are released. However if you have any queries about these arrangements please get in touch with
the HE Quality Team immediately via HE@bridgwater.ac.uk
Resitting an exam or resubmitting coursework
If you are offered the chance to resit an examination the window for this is normally during mid August (unless
your studies commenced in January in which case resits are normally during March/April). Please note that you
need to be available for this as failure to attend an examination, unless you can prove extenuating circumstances,
will result in a mark of zero being recorded.
If you are offered the chance to resubmit coursework this is normally towards mid to late August. If you miss the
deadline a mark of zero or a non-submission will be recorded. If you have any queries please get in touch with the
HE Quality Team via HE@bridgwater.ac.uk
Results from referred work or resit examinations are considered by a Referred Exam/Assessment Board during
September. Following decisions made at the Board your results will be released, again within set timeframes as
above.
