Cities for Climate Protection program Greenfield Joined, Feb ’08 Goal: Help cities and towns reduce Climate Change emissions to ZERO worldwide. Philosophy: If you cannot measure it, you cannot control it.
Why Did We Choose ICLEI? We needed to get Gov on board! It is a respected international program - UN It offers support - people, materials, & software It gives Town Gov a step by step time line It compliments other programs-TT, 10% etc. DON’T STOP DOING THESE!
What are the ICLEI steps? Where are we in the ICLEI process? 1. Sign on – designate staff liaisons – Feb. 2008 2. Engage People in the Process - ongoing 3. Get ICLEI software & training – June 2008 4. Conduct the Energy Audit & Emissions Analysis & Write Greenfield Energy Audit – June 2008 - May 2009
What are the Next Steps? 5. Set Long Term Goals – Feb 2009 By 2050: 80% reduction in C02 & ZERO energy dollars leaving the community 6. Analyze options & Set Achievable Milestones 7. Draft the Plan: Gov’t & Community-wide Plan 8. Implement the Plan 9. Monitor & Report Progress 10. Revise & RE-Implement Plan as Needed

Data Sources Natural gas – From Berkshire Gas, for usage and cost, broken down by residential, commercial, industrial for FY01 & FY08 Electricity – from WMECO , broken down by residential, commercial, industrial for FY08. Cost based on average $/kwh in Greenfield. FY01 3% more, based on fact that electricity usage dropped about 1% last few years. Oil – Residential usage based on # of households that use oil in 2000 census + USDOE usage/household. Cost based on average cost in Greenfield in ‘01&’08.
Data Sources Oil – Commercial & Industrial – Usage based on square footage of buildings from Greenfield Assessors office and USDOE data on energy use per sq ft. Propane, Wood, Coal – Residential usage based on # of households using that fuel as noted in 2000 Census and USDOE data on usage per household. Community-wide Audit… Most Startling Observation - $$ In FY2001 we spent $48.1 million on energy With 7,905 households that is $6,142 / household With 18,666 people that is $2,601 / person
Most Startling Observation - $$$$$ In FY2008 we spent $85.8 million on energy Assuming the same number of people $10,951 / household $4,638 / person

Understanding fuel cost & CO2 emissions – by fuel type Today, electricity is the biggest CO2 emitter and the most expensive
Total Energy Used… by fuel type and sector Transportation used the most followed by electricity and oil
Air Pollution … Health Care Costs Health Care Without Harm calculates that emissions from our electrical use alone causes direct expenses of over ½ $mil each year, and an additional $5.4 mil per year in societal costs due to respiratory diseases, hospital visits, lost work, premature deaths.
