This document discusses harmonic mitigation using a modular multilevel converter. It begins with an overview of harmonics in power systems and problems they cause. Various traditional harmonic mitigation measures are described along with their advantages and disadvantages. The document then proposes using an active harmonic conditioner with a modular multilevel converter to inject compensating harmonic currents. Circuit diagrams and control methods for the modular multilevel converter are provided. Simulation results show 15% reduction in harmonic current with this active compensation approach.
