Happy Halloween!
The Spookiest Holiday of
All
Where does Halloween Come
From?
• The Celts celebrated All
Hallows Day 2000 years
ago.
• It was a day that the
living and dead visited.
• The day before All
Hallows was Hallows Eve
Why do we Wear Costumes?
• The Celts believed
that on Hallows Eve
both good and evil
spirits of the dead
came to Earth.
• They wore
costumes so the evil
spirits would not
recognize them and
hurt them.
What are Jack O’ Lanterns?
• On Hallows Eve when
the Celts went outside,
they put lights in
vegetables to scare evil
spirits..
• Now, we put those lights
in pumpkins.
• We carve the pumpkins
so the light can shine
and we call them Jack
O’ Lanterns.
What about “Trick or Treat”?
• The tradition
originates in
“souling,” when the
Celts asked for
cakes at each
house.
• Now, children walk
to each house and
ask for candy by
saying “Trick or
Treat!”
What do Adults Do?
• Adults stay at home
and give children
candy at the door.
• They also have
parties and tell
scary stories.
• Some teenagers
and adults go to
haunted houses or
to corn mazes.
Halloween in the World
• Because of
movies and
common culture,
many countries
celebrate
Halloween.
• What is
Halloween like in
Spain? Day of the Dead in Mexico
