There is some customers in Qingdao show but not
too much, we’ve got new customers in those three
days, gather dozens of customers information from
the show. Many new customers is new starting in tyre
business, they want to find good supplier from this
show. It’s our chance to collaborate in tyre business,
but the most important thing is how to let them know
we are professional and worth to be trust. There are
some typical questions during the exchanges
process with customers. For example, do you have
PCR, TBR or OTR tyres? What kind of product do
you working on? What’s your best seller? Are you
factory or trading company? What’s wrong with my
broken tyres and do you know the reason? What’s
the strength and advantage of your company? ... It’s
a good way to train our ability about how to talk with
customers. There are many customers from different
countries. They have different demand and purpose,
that’s why there will be different answers for those
questions.
Although the show is only three days long, it further
enhancing our communicative competence and
professional knowledge. I want to thank Sophia and
Ali in there, I learned more skills when they talked
with customers. They show professional skills and
deserve to be trust by customers. For instance, they
always know how to give a presentation about the
culture and power of our company. They are easily to
explain the question that we are factory or trading
company, and let customers don’t mind we are
factory or not. A question from the different angle
analysis, the obtained conclusion nature is different.
Sometimes those questions has caught me off
guard, so it’s reflect the weak basic knowledge and
poor practice ability. I gain benefit more from this
show, also a good experience.
In the show, I also learned that how to distinguish
clients and peers. It’s a great way to learn product of
peer, learned from others strong point to offset one’s
weakness.
Through this exhibition, it have opened my eyes to
my mistake. Only by constantly learning, we can let
ourselves keep a saturated state, to cope with the
progress of market bring us new requirements and
challenges.
The China International Tyre and Wheel Fair (CTF), held form 9-11 April, in Qingdao is an international trade fair
for the rubber and tyre industry. The three days Qingdao tyre show ended quietly, but continued Increasing ours
ability through sum up experience and lessons. It’s a great chance to participate the exhibition, which is also a
great challenge and exercises.

purchasers and product information is increasing,
and the advantages of local traders in Dubai are
gradually weakened, and customers are more
directly looking for suppliers. Many countries in
Africa, especially because of the occlusion of
information and the backwardness of network
information in history, have always been the main
market for Dubai traders, but in recent years, African
customers have gained more and more information,
and they are actively seeking to find supplies. The
increasing opportunities for business have led to
many small trading companies in Dubai being
directly emptied and losing many direct customers.
However, Dubai's big traders, because of their
long-standing customer and brand accumulation,
have a place in terms of both suppliers and the
terminal market. Anyhow Automechanika Dubai tyres
and batteries parts still have chance to find directly
customers in next year.

The Chinese tyre industry was developed in a high
speed in the past three decades. Go back to 12
years ago, I was just stepped into this tyre industry, it
was so prosperous and taking the fast moving
forward to the bright future. Everybody can see the
chances and possibilities from this business at that
time. We were kidding ourselves to be "TYREMAN",
and spending our youth and enthusiasm on this
industry till now.
After the unhealthy expansion of many years, we find
ourselves in the bad situation that sharing the same
products with low added value, and the markets are
more and more transparent. The prices are much
more influenced by the raw materials and the
exchange rate of currency. It's the time to for
Chinese tyre industry to make the changes:
1. Accelerating the eliminate backward production
capacity, and promote the industrial transformation
and updating.
There are too many tyre manufactories in china, the
industry concentration is very low, which caused the
low-end brand overcapacity, product homogeneity is
very normal, the ability for research and
development is low. In this way, the merge and
reorganization between tyre enterprises is extremely
urgent. We have already witnessed several
reorganization of big tyre manufactures, and finally
the qualified large enterprises will get the benefits
from this transformation.
2. Making long term investments on the research
and development of tyre products and technologies.
Many famous global tyre companies have
established their R&D centers overseas, which
forming an international R&D system. With the
globalization of Chinese tyre industry, some
enterprises gradually have the ability to participate in
international competition and start to consider
obtaining innovation resources globally. Setting up
R&D centers overseas has become a strategic
choice for many tyre enterprises. In recent years,
Chinese tyre industry frequently encountered foreign
trade barriers, "technology + brand" strategic
development is the key to break through overseas
barriers.
3. Widen the brand marketing and deepen the brand
concept inside the end-user.
"Technology + Brand" strategy is the key point for the
development of the Chinese brand tyres. "Made in
china" is well known all over the world, but People
easily links "Made in china" is inexpensive
manufactured goods with low technological content.
It's the pathetic fact. I think "Technology + Brand"
concept can improve "Made in China" to "created in
China" then to "intelligent manufacturing in China".
From the establishment of Hanmix company, we put
the brand marketing on the top of the development
strategy, this is related with the advanced leading
idea of the creator, Mr Ali Alsuhaibi. We are making
the big marketing net with high quality products to
expand the products map of Hanmix.
As one of the member of Hanmix team, I deeply
recognized that the importance of the products and
service. Under the leader of our General Manager Mr
Ali, Hanmix is always doing the characteristic way of
selling and marketing. We focus on the quality of the
products, that's why we care more on selecting to
work with the best manufactures. In recent years, we
are increasing the input on the best designed moulds
with the excellent formula on OTR RADIAL and PCR
tyres, which aims on supplying the most competitive
products for our customers.
Not only the products itself, but also the service
concept is deeply planted in the mind of Hanmix
team. Customers are the best resource for us, they
make the best choice to work with us and we will
surely pay them back the best service and
supportive marketing strategies for them moving fast
forwarder. Thanks to them, Hanmix can go farther
and farther.
Welcome to Hanmix Family, you will get the most

Exporters and importers: will the new SABER system
impact your business?
The SABER system is a new mandatory
importer-based computer system facilitating online
certification of imports into Saudi Arabia. The
long-term plan is for SABER to become the only
system for clearing goods through Saudi customs
and replace the SASO COC. All shipments arriving
into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will require a
Product CoC and a Shipment CoC to be issued
through SABER.
What products need to be processed through
SABER?
Product types and categories will be gradually
introduced into SABER in order to provide a smooth
transition to the new system and ensure there are no
delays in trade or shipments into KSA. Once the
product type becomes mandatory on SABER then
SASO COC can no longer be issued for that product
type.
Are SASO certificates still valid for shipments to
Saudi Arabia?
SASO certificates can still be issued for most
products. As SASO gradually introduces product
types to the mandatory SABER list, the number of
products still suitable for SASO COC will decrease.
For this reason, it is paramount that all importers are
fully prepared for SABER and the change to the new
system. To clarify which system is required for your
product please contact XDS Solutions today for the
latest update and how to manage the switch.
Features of the new SABER system
Products registration and approval online
Electronic access to Certificates of Conformity
Speeding up of the issuance process
Reduction of fraud and manipulation
Additional consumer protection by eliminating
non-conforming products
Benefits of the SABER system
SABER benefits importers by speeding up the
issuance process of electronic Certificates of
Conformity for your imported products, also
delivering the following benefits:
Reduced time to import products with Saudi customs
checks aiming to be under 24 hours
Linking of your product approval to the electronic
Certificate of Conformity throughout the product
registration validity
The three stages of SABER when fully implemented
There are three stages of the SABER process, all of
which fall under the responsibility of the importer.
Stage 1: Importer needs to set up their own account
and add all of the products on the system they wish
to import.
Stage 2: Importer needs to apply for product
certificates and approval (these are valid for a year).
Stage 3: Importer needs to upload invoice and apply
for shipment cert (COC).
How will the SABER system changes affect me?
The implementation of the SABER system will create
a shift in who is responsible for arranging the
customs clearance of the goods. It is now the
responsibility of the importing company based in
Saudi Arabia to register their company, products and
shipments on the system.

Dubai has emerged as a leading supplier of tyres,
tubes and batteries to many international markets.
With a well organised retail and wholesaler sector,
the tyre exports and re-exports business in Dubai
has been a major contributor to Dubai's rising
re-export trade to the GCC region, CIS, Iran, Africa
and the Indian subcontinent. Industry sources value
the total trade in tyres in Dubai at around US$ 1.5
billion. According to rough estimates, tyres worth
US$400 million for buses and lorries are imported to
Dubai every year, mainly from China, Japan and
India. Almost 65 per cent of these tyres are
re-exported to regional markets like Iran, Iraq, and
other GCC countries. The balance 35 per cent of
tyres are sold through retail outlets for local
consumption.
The growing importance of the tyre business in
Dubai can be gauged by the fact that this market is
expected to grow approximately 30 per cent in the
next 5 years. In addition to the rising demand from
regional and re-export markets like Africa, local retail
sales of tyres is also expected to continue growing at
a healthy pace in the coming years. The number of
cars in Dubai has been increasing at an alarming
pace in recent times. Dubai has one car for every
1.84 residents with an average vehicle occupancy
1.7 per car. In fact, Dubai has the highest rate of car
ownership than any other city in the world.
Furthermore, the absence of railway connections in
the Arabian Peninsula forces most of the
overland-transport via roads, making it a
high-volume sales territory for tyre manufacturers.
With such a huge market to cater to, the tyres and
automobile parts business in Dubai has been
enjoying a robust growth with the passing of each
year. The overall automobiles sector in Dubai is
made even more attractive by the fact that there are
no automotive manufacturing industries. As a result,
most of the vehicles and automotive parts are
imported from international markets and, in many
cases, further re-exported to regional and
international markets.
Dubai’s status as the regional distribution centre has
helped tyre dealers in Dubai to develop new markets
for their re-exports trade. As a result, a large
percentage of tyres imported into Dubai are
re-exported to neighbouring markets like Iran, GCC,
Saudi Arabia and new and emerging markets in
Africa. Many African countries like Kenya, Tanzania,
Sudan, Nigeria are sourcing their requirements for
tyres from Dubai. It is estimated that the global tyre
market for passenger cars, light-, medium- and
heavy-duty truck applications accounts for nearly 1.4
billion tyres. Dubai is fast emerging as a major player
and a noteworthy distribution hub for the global tyres
trade. Dubai's strategic geographical location,
together with its excellent shipping connections to
various parts of the world, has helped the city
emerge as a major business hub in the Middle East.

The supply and demand for rubber may be balanced
in 2019; however, the rubber market may not fully be
escaped from the oversupply pressure in case the
price recovers to an attractive level. In addition, the
production of many countries will increase compared
to the expected.
Forecast on rubber market in 2019 from Import and
Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade),
said natural rubber price may be difficult to increase
strongly since the world economy may slow down. In
addition, low crude oil prices are expected to support
the demand for synthetic rubber.
The matter of slowing down in the consumption of
natural rubber while the supply is ready to increase
when the price of rubber becomes attractive, can
lead to pressure on the rubber market. Although
being lower than the 5.2% increase in 2018, global
natural rubber consumption is expected to increase
by 4.2% in 2019, reaching 14.59 million tons. In
China, natural rubber consumption is expected to
grow 3.2% in 2019 to 5.85 million tons, while that in
India is forecasted to increase by 4% in 2019.
The year 2019 is also expected to have the world
rubber production being close to the consumption
level, with an estimate of 14.84 million tons.
It is projected that Thailand will increase by 200.000
hectares in 2019 and the area of rubber up to the
time of the highest latex output in Ivory Coast,
Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Brazil will also
increase. Meanwhile, Indonesia, Vietnam, China,
Malaysia and India are expected to witness a slight
increase in production.

Driving anywhere in the Middle East can be a very
interesting experience for travelers not used to such
behaviour, but it does go to a new extreme in the
UAE.
Driver behaviour in the UAE can sometimes be an
eye opening experience, with drivers engaging in all
manner of extremely unsafe driving practices such
as cutting in front of moving cars, changing lanes
without in dicating, speeding onto roundabouts at
ludicrous speeds and then for extra fun, trying to exit
from the inside lane.
A good thing to keep in mind is to pretend that every
other driver isn't aware that any other cars exist, or if
they do it's only a vague concept to worry about like
a piece of paper on the road.
Driving in the U.A.E - Is it Safe?
On the intercity roads, things get a little bit more
drastic. While you don't have to worry about
roundabouts, be aware that the inner lane is the one
reserved for speeding luxury cars, and speeds of
over 200kmh are not uncommon. At that speed, it is
hard to break in time approaching a car doing a
paltry 140kmh.
As an added bonus, intercity highways have
unmarked speed bumps, shifting sands and
sometimes, camels. Yes. Seriously. Camels.
If you plan on driving in the desert, camels become a
bigger problem. You should make sure that you have
a well maintained four wheel drive vehicle, adequate
water, and a mobile phone with sufficient reception if
you do plan on driving in the desert.
Road laws in the UAE are quite comprehensive. If
you are involved in an accident you must leave the
vehicle exactly where it is, even if that's in the middle
of the road. Dubai is an exception, where intense
traffic means that this would be a major road hazard.
If someone is injured in an accident, the person that
caused the accident goes immediately to jail until the
injured person is out of hospital. Should someone die
in an accident, the person that caused the accident
is liable for a US $55,000 dollar fine, called "Daiya"
as compensation for the death.
Even minor accidents can involve lengthy litigation
where the drivers are prevented from leaving the
country, so be very careful when and how you drive,
even if no one else is.
Road rage, even rude gestures such as the middle
finger salute and swearing, actually can attract
significant penalties. So be careful to remain calm at
all times.
Digital cameras for registering traffic violations are
very common on UAE roads, which you may find
strange considering the general state of traffic, but
nonetheless they are there. Primarily they are for
speeding, but they also register other traffic
violations.
Oddly, you cannot turn right at a red light unless
there is a yield sign. Parking is prohibited where the
curb is painted yellow and black and the use of front
seat belts is mandatory.
Driving in the U.A.E - Zero Tolerance
The UAE has a zero limit for intoxication, and the
penalties for driving under the influence of any
alcohol at all can be severe. If you are arrested for
drink driving, you can be sent to jail for many days
while awaiting a court hearing. The penalty can be
heavy fines and in a worst case scenario,
imprisonment. For Muslims, even those of non-UAE
origin, you may also be lashed.

  • 3. 01 02 There is some customers in Qingdao show but not too much, we’ve got new customers in those three days, gather dozens of customers information from the show. Many new customers is new starting in tyre business, they want to find good supplier from this show. It’s our chance to collaborate in tyre business, but the most important thing is how to let them know we are professional and worth to be trust. There are some typical questions during the exchanges process with customers. For example, do you have PCR, TBR or OTR tyres? What kind of product do you working on? What’s your best seller? Are you factory or trading company? What’s wrong with my broken tyres and do you know the reason? What’s the strength and advantage of your company? ... It’s a good way to train our ability about how to talk with customers. There are many customers from different countries. They have different demand and purpose, that’s why there will be different answers for those questions. Although the show is only three days long, it further enhancing our communicative competence and professional knowledge. I want to thank Sophia and Ali in there, I learned more skills when they talked with customers. They show professional skills and deserve to be trust by customers. For instance, they always know how to give a presentation about the culture and power of our company. They are easily to explain the question that we are factory or trading company, and let customers don’t mind we are factory or not. A question from the different angle analysis, the obtained conclusion nature is different. Sometimes those questions has caught me off guard, so it’s reflect the weak basic knowledge and poor practice ability. I gain benefit more from this show, also a good experience. In the show, I also learned that how to distinguish clients and peers. It’s a great way to learn product of peer, learned from others strong point to offset one’s weakness. Through this exhibition, it have opened my eyes to my mistake. Only by constantly learning, we can let ourselves keep a saturated state, to cope with the progress of market bring us new requirements and challenges. The China International Tyre and Wheel Fair (CTF), held form 9-11 April, in Qingdao is an international trade fair for the rubber and tyre industry. The three days Qingdao tyre show ended quietly, but continued Increasing ours ability through sum up experience and lessons. It’s a great chance to participate the exhibition, which is also a great challenge and exercises. -- Exhibition Summary By Dylan Chen
As the largest international automotive aftermarket trade show in the Middle East, Automechanika Dubai acts as the central trading link for markets that are difficult to reach connecting the wider Middle East, Africa, Asia and key CIS countries. Highlights from 2019 edition 1,880 exhibitors 63 exhibiting countries 23 Country Pavilions Exhibitors in addition to Dubai's local companies have many countries from neighboring countries. Dubai's local traders mainly visit old suppliers and find new suppliers, while the audiences in neighboring countries especially tend to look for suppliers. In today's rapid development of network information and e-commerce, the amount of information is too large, the transparency of supplier Из Инна -- Exhibition Summary By Sophia Lee Я многое получил от навыков и опыта. 03 04 purchasers and product information is increasing, and the advantages of local traders in Dubai are gradually weakened, and customers are more directly looking for suppliers. Many countries in Africa, especially because of the occlusion of information and the backwardness of network information in history, have always been the main market for Dubai traders, but in recent years, African customers have gained more and more information, and they are actively seeking to find supplies. The increasing opportunities for business have led to many small trading companies in Dubai being directly emptied and losing many direct customers. However, Dubai's big traders, because of their long-standing customer and brand accumulation, have a place in terms of both suppliers and the terminal market. Anyhow Automechanika Dubai tyres and batteries parts still have chance to find directly customers in next year.

  • 6. The Chinese tyre industry was developed in a high speed in the past three decades. Go back to 12 years ago, I was just stepped into this tyre industry, it was so prosperous and taking the fast moving forward to the bright future. Everybody can see the chances and possibilities from this business at that time. We were kidding ourselves to be "TYREMAN", and spending our youth and enthusiasm on this industry till now. After the unhealthy expansion of many years, we find ourselves in the bad situation that sharing the same products with low added value, and the markets are more and more transparent. The prices are much more influenced by the raw materials and the exchange rate of currency. It's the time to for Chinese tyre industry to make the changes: 1. Accelerating the eliminate backward production capacity, and promote the industrial transformation and updating. There are too many tyre manufactories in china, the industry concentration is very low, which caused the low-end brand overcapacity, product homogeneity is very normal, the ability for research and development is low. In this way, the merge and reorganization between tyre enterprises is extremely urgent. We have already witnessed several reorganization of big tyre manufactures, and finally the qualified large enterprises will get the benefits from this transformation. 2. Making long term investments on the research and development of tyre products and technologies. Many famous global tyre companies have established their R&D centers overseas, which forming an international R&D system. With the globalization of Chinese tyre industry, some enterprises gradually have the ability to participate in international competition and start to consider obtaining innovation resources globally. Setting up R&D centers overseas has become a strategic choice for many tyre enterprises. In recent years, Chinese tyre industry frequently encountered foreign trade barriers, "technology + brand" strategic development is the key to break through overseas barriers. 3. Widen the brand marketing and deepen the brand concept inside the end-user. "Technology + Brand" strategy is the key point for the development of the Chinese brand tyres. "Made in china" is well known all over the world, but People easily links "Made in china" is inexpensive manufactured goods with low technological content. It's the pathetic fact. I think "Technology + Brand" concept can improve "Made in China" to "created in China" then to "intelligent manufacturing in China". From the establishment of Hanmix company, we put the brand marketing on the top of the development strategy, this is related with the advanced leading idea of the creator, Mr Ali Alsuhaibi. We are making the big marketing net with high quality products to expand the products map of Hanmix. The SABER system is a new mandatory importer-based computer system facilitating online certification of imports into Saudi Arabia. The long-term plan is for SABER to become the only system for clearing goods through Saudi customs and replace the SASO COC. All shipments arriving into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will require a Product CoC and a Shipment CoC to be issued through SABER. What products need to be processed through SABER? Product types and categories will be gradually introduced into SABER in order to provide a smooth transition to the new system and ensure there are no delays in trade or shipments into KSA. Once the product type becomes mandatory on SABER then SASO COC can no longer be issued for that product type. Are SASO certificates still valid for shipments to Saudi Arabia? SASO certificates can still be issued for most products. As SASO gradually introduces product types to the mandatory SABER list, the number of products still suitable for SASO COC will decrease. For this reason, it is paramount that all importers are fully prepared for SABER and the change to the new system. To clarify which system is required for your product please contact XDS Solutions today for the latest update and how to manage the switch. Features of the new SABER system Products registration and approval online Electronic access to Certificates of Conformity Speeding up of the issuance process Reduction of fraud and manipulation Additional consumer protection by eliminating non-conforming products Benefits of the SABER system SABER benefits importers by speeding up the issuance process of electronic Certificates of Conformity for your imported products, also delivering the following benefits: Reduced time to import products with Saudi customs checks aiming to be under 24 hours Linking of your product approval to the electronic Certificate of Conformity throughout the product registration validity The three stages of SABER when fully implemented There are three stages of the SABER process, all of which fall under the responsibility of the importer. Stage 1: Importer needs to set up their own account and add all of the products on the system they wish to import. Stage 2: Importer needs to apply for product certificates and approval (these are valid for a year). Stage 3: Importer needs to upload invoice and apply for shipment cert (COC). How will the SABER system changes affect me? The implementation of the SABER system will create a shift in who is responsible for arranging the customs clearance of the goods. It is now the responsibility of the importing company based in Saudi Arabia to register their company, products and shipments on the system. 11 12

  • 10. Source: Africa Business Dubai has emerged as a leading supplier of tyres, tubes and batteries to many international markets. With a well organised retail and wholesaler sector, the tyre exports and re-exports business in Dubai has been a major contributor to Dubai's rising re-export trade to the GCC region, CIS, Iran, Africa and the Indian subcontinent. Industry sources value the total trade in tyres in Dubai at around US$ 1.5 billion. According to rough estimates, tyres worth US$400 million for buses and lorries are imported to Dubai every year, mainly from China, Japan and India. Almost 65 per cent of these tyres are re-exported to regional markets like Iran, Iraq, and other GCC countries. The balance 35 per cent of tyres are sold through retail outlets for local consumption. The growing importance of the tyre business in Dubai can be gauged by the fact that this market is expected to grow approximately 30 per cent in the next 5 years. In addition to the rising demand from regional and re-export markets like Africa, local retail sales of tyres is also expected to continue growing at a healthy pace in the coming years. The number of cars in Dubai has been increasing at an alarming pace in recent times. Dubai has one car for every 1.84 residents with an average vehicle occupancy 1.7 per car. In fact, Dubai has the highest rate of car ownership than any other city in the world. Furthermore, the absence of railway connections in the Arabian Peninsula forces most of the overland-transport via roads, making it a high-volume sales territory for tyre manufacturers. With such a huge market to cater to, the tyres and automobile parts business in Dubai has been enjoying a robust growth with the passing of each year. The overall automobiles sector in Dubai is made even more attractive by the fact that there are no automotive manufacturing industries. As a result, most of the vehicles and automotive parts are imported from international markets and, in many cases, further re-exported to regional and international markets. Dubai’s status as the regional distribution centre has helped tyre dealers in Dubai to develop new markets for their re-exports trade. As a result, a large percentage of tyres imported into Dubai are re-exported to neighbouring markets like Iran, GCC, Saudi Arabia and new and emerging markets in Africa. Many African countries like Kenya, Tanzania, Sudan, Nigeria are sourcing their requirements for tyres from Dubai. It is estimated that the global tyre market for passenger cars, light-, medium- and heavy-duty truck applications accounts for nearly 1.4 billion tyres. Dubai is fast emerging as a major player and a noteworthy distribution hub for the global tyres trade. Dubai's strategic geographical location, together with its excellent shipping connections to various parts of the world, has helped the city emerge as a major business hub in the Middle East. 15 16
  • 11. Source: rubber-tyre.com The supply and demand for rubber may be balanced in 2019; however, the rubber market may not fully be escaped from the oversupply pressure in case the price recovers to an attractive level. In addition, the production of many countries will increase compared to the expected. Forecast on rubber market in 2019 from Import and Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), said natural rubber price may be difficult to increase strongly since the world economy may slow down. In addition, low crude oil prices are expected to support the demand for synthetic rubber. The matter of slowing down in the consumption of natural rubber while the supply is ready to increase when the price of rubber becomes attractive, can lead to pressure on the rubber market. Although being lower than the 5.2% increase in 2018, global natural rubber consumption is expected to increase by 4.2% in 2019, reaching 14.59 million tons. In China, natural rubber consumption is expected to grow 3.2% in 2019 to 5.85 million tons, while that in India is forecasted to increase by 4% in 2019. The year 2019 is also expected to have the world rubber production being close to the consumption level, with an estimate of 14.84 million tons. It is projected that Thailand will increase by 200.000 hectares in 2019 and the area of rubber up to the time of the highest latex output in Ivory Coast, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Brazil will also increase. Meanwhile, Indonesia, Vietnam, China, Malaysia and India are expected to witness a slight increase in production. 17 18 RF-666 Strong wear-resistant capability. • 12. Source: World Nomads Driving anywhere in the Middle East can be a very interesting experience for travelers not used to such behaviour, but it does go to a new extreme in the UAE. Driver behaviour in the UAE can sometimes be an eye opening experience, with drivers engaging in all manner of extremely unsafe driving practices such as cutting in front of moving cars, changing lanes without in dicating, speeding onto roundabouts at ludicrous speeds and then for extra fun, trying to exit from the inside lane. A good thing to keep in mind is to pretend that every other driver isn't aware that any other cars exist, or if they do it's only a vague concept to worry about like a piece of paper on the road. Driving in the U.A.E - Is it Safe? On the intercity roads, things get a little bit more drastic. While you don't have to worry about roundabouts, be aware that the inner lane is the one reserved for speeding luxury cars, and speeds of over 200kmh are not uncommon. At that speed, it is hard to break in time approaching a car doing a paltry 140kmh. As an added bonus, intercity highways have unmarked speed bumps, shifting sands and sometimes, camels. Yes. Seriously. Camels. If you plan on driving in the desert, camels become a bigger problem. You should make sure that you have a well maintained four wheel drive vehicle, adequate water, and a mobile phone with sufficient reception if you do plan on driving in the desert. Road laws in the UAE are quite comprehensive. If you are involved in an accident you must leave the vehicle exactly where it is, even if that's in the middle of the road. Dubai is an exception, where intense traffic means that this would be a major road hazard. If someone is injured in an accident, the person that caused the accident goes immediately to jail until the injured person is out of hospital. Should someone die in an accident, the person that caused the accident is liable for a US $55,000 dollar fine, called "Daiya" as compensation for the death. Even minor accidents can involve lengthy litigation where the drivers are prevented from leaving the country, so be very careful when and how you drive, even if no one else is. Road rage, even rude gestures such as the middle finger salute and swearing, actually can attract significant penalties. So be careful to remain calm at all times. Digital cameras for registering traffic violations are very common on UAE roads, which you may find strange considering the general state of traffic, but nonetheless they are there. Primarily they are for speeding, but they also register other traffic violations. Oddly, you cannot turn right at a red light unless there is a yield sign. Parking is prohibited where the curb is painted yellow and black and the use of front seat belts is mandatory. Driving in the U.A.E - Zero Tolerance The UAE has a zero limit for intoxication, and the penalties for driving under the influence of any alcohol at all can be severe. If you are arrested for drink driving, you can be sent to jail for many days while awaiting a court hearing. The penalty can be heavy fines and in a worst case scenario, imprisonment. For Muslims, even those of non-UAE origin, you may also be lashed. TRAVEL SAFETY & ROAD RULES 19 20
