Wanna Transgressa little? Use Magic!– A presentation about“Magic(al)”Realism
Bronwyn Jaya DiPeri
Stonecoast, January 2012
“Magical Realism presents the [rational mind] with something paradoxical and incontestable, something it
simply cannot explain, but also will not allow itself to deny.”~Bruce Kawin
What is it? Any story with elements that cannot be explained by rational science. The
fantastical element is not considered extraordinary and almost all other lawsof physics apply.
What’s its purpose?
Defamiliarization of ordinary objects and experiences, making them “new” again
Decentering the “Privileged Centers”(ethnicities, gender, financialpower)
Trangressing, aswell as bridge-building
The tools:
Physical Magic: Includes special powers (like flying, shapeshifting, or clairvoyance), or the appearance of
beings or elements that should not logically be present (like angels or ghosts, or ice that doesn’t melt inside fire)
Primitivistic Magic: Includes shamanism and the incorporation or mimicry of cultural myths and/or
superstitions
Psychic/Psychological Magic:Includes physical manifestations, or allegorical experiences, that are
projections directly from the character’s mind or imagination
Mystical Magic:Arises from the physical environment itself, manifesting the mystical qualities of the land,
the elements (water, air, fire, etc.), and the living things (plants, animals)
Hyperbole: Where ordinary sizes and quantities are exaggerated so much that they begin to begin to take on a
magical atmosphere
Carnivalesque:Subverts and liberates assumptions through humor and chaos
Grotesque: Any sort of hyperbolic distortion that creates a sense of strangeness through the confusion or
interpenetration of different realms like animate/inanimate or human/animal. Often dark and death-embracing.
Fairy Tale Rhythms:Oral storytelling in written form; uses rhythmic and repetitive language and/or images
to invoke ritual and an altered mind-state.
