In both Isaiah 9:1-3 and Isaiah 60:1-3, the prophet Isaiah describes how, in the previous generation, the Galilee region became a dark place. When God allowed the Assyrians to invade and subjugate the northern Kingdom of Israel, the first ferocious attack fell upon Galilee. In chapter 60 Isaiah prophesies that the place first darkened by the Assyrian conquest would be the first region where God’s light would rise and God’s glory would be seen. In His gospel, the apostle John makes it clear that Jesus is that light that shines in the darkness – a light which darkness cannot overcome. And in his first epistle, John connects the dots to us – that we are called to walk in the light of Christ.

"The Christian no longer loves sin; it is the
object of his sternest horror: he no longer
regards it as a mere trifle, plays with it, or
talks of it with unconcern … Sin is
dejected in the Christian's heart, though
it is not ejected. Sin may enter the heart,

The Darkness And The Coming Light
Isa. 9:1-3
9 But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. 2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone. 3 You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil.
2 Kings 15

2 Kings 16:9

Darkness and Light are a key theme in the Book of Isaiah.
Isaiah 5:20
Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
Isaiah 8
19 And when they say to you, “Inquire of the mediums and the necromancers who chirp and mutter,” should not a people inquire of their God? Should they inquire of the dead on behalf of the living? 20 To the teaching and to the testimony! If they will not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn. 21 They will pass through the land, greatly distressed and hungry. And when they are hungry, they will be enraged and will speak contemptuously against[i] their king and their God and turn their faces upward. 22 And they will look to the earth, but behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish. And they will be thrust into thick darkness.
Second Point
The Light that Could Not Be Overcome
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life,[a] and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Matthew 4
12 Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. 13 And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali,
Matthew 4
14 so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: 15 “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles
16 the people dwelling in darknesshave seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.”
Isa. 60:1-3
60 Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. 2 For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will be seen upon you.3 And nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising.
Why Galilee?
Galilee was multi-cultural. Isaiah calls it “Galilee of the Gentiles.”
Assyrian resettlement policy
In the centuries after Isaiah, this ethnic diversity continued to grow as Alexander the Great conquered this region and introduced Greek culture and philosophy.
In 63 BC Rome gains control and adds a Roman touch.
All of this created a culture that was open to new ideas.
Why Galilee?
Galilee was highly populated.
Describe population of Sarasota FL before and after snowbird migration.
Jerusalem in the time of Jesus was about the same as Sarasota. The best estimates are that there were 50,000 people in Jerusalem at the time of Jesus, and that the population would double during the Jewish festivals.
According to Josephus, at the time immediately preceding the Jewish revolt against Rome, a few decades after Jesus, there were 200 villages in Galilee.
There is a big spread in the population estimates, but the most reliable sources state that the total population of Galilee at the time of Jesus was between 200,000 and 700,000.
Galilee was the most fertile region in the Holy Land. It was their Midwest… the breadbasket of the Holy Land.
Why Galilee?
Galilee had a strong disciple-making culture.
Third Point
The Light in Which We Must Walk
5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
Walking in the light means walking in God’s truth.
Walking in the light puts us in close fellowship with others who are walking in God’s light.
Walking in the light changes our relationship with sin.
