Today we pass through the fastgrowing towns and farms of the Plain of Sharonenroute to Caesarea, site of major events in the
lives of Peter and Paul. Its on to Megiddo,inspiration for James Micheners "The Source",and prophesied site of Armageddon.Archaeological digs reveal 20 layers ofcivilization, including fortifications of KingSolomon and the water tunnel of King Ahab.Megiddo provides a magnificent view of thefertile Jezreel Valley, at the crossroads of theancient Via Maris. We drive through the JezreelValley to Sepphoris, the former Roman capitalof the Galilee and the famous seat of theSanhedrin, the ancient Jewish ruling council, inthe second century A.D. Sepphoris is comprisedof a Crusader fortress, a Roman amphitheaterand numerous impressive mosaics. Continuethrough the rolling hills of the Galilee toNazareth. Nazareth Village brings to life a farmand Galilean village, recreating Nazareth as itwas 2,000 years ago. It is a window into the lifeof Jesus, the city’s most famous citizen.Overnight in TiberiasFRI, MAR 2 SEA OF GALILEEWe will visit an ancient boat believed to be fromJesus’ time found in the Sea of Galilee in 1986.We walk into old Capernaum with the ancientsynagogue; on to the site of the Multiplication ofthe Loaves and Fishes (Tabgha), the Sermon on
the Mount and the Mount of Beatitudes. In theafternoon we will journey north to CaesareaPhillipi (Banias Spring) where Peter confessed,“You are the Christ, the Son of the LivingGod” (Matthew 16:16.) Dinner and overnight atour hotel in Tiberias.SAT, MAR 3 NORTHERN GALILEEToday we will journey to Hazor originallyconquered by Joshua in 1300 B.C. KingSolomon began reconstruction here and KingAhab erected a magnificent palace here as well.Later we visit Bethsaida. This day alone isworth the trip! We are now literally walking in thefootsteps of Jesus. We will take a mostmemorable boat ride on the Sea of Galilee, ina replica of the ancient wooden boat used inJesus’ day. This evening we will visit the JordanRiver. Return to our hotel in Tiberias forovernight.SUN, MAR 4 JORDAN VALLEY • PETRADrive along the Jordan Valley to Beit Shean tosee the expansive excavations taking place atthis ancient Roman Decapolis city. Later wecross into Jordan. Visit Mt. Nebo which isreputed to be the burial place of Moses. Arrivein Petra in time for dinner and overnight.
MON, MAR 5 PETRA • DEAD SEAThis morning we tour the city of Petra, lost to theworld for centuries, the “Rose-Red City Half asOld as Time”, lay hidden in the mountains ofsouthern Jordan. It had been a stronghold andcapital for the Nabateans. It had a fatallyvulnerable fault: its water came by aqueductfrom nearby Wadi Musa. When the secret wasdiscovered and the aqueduct cut, it fell to Romein A.D.106 When Rome entered, already therewere Nabatean tombs, temples and monumentscut directly out of the red rock. This morning wetravel through the deep and narrow passageswhich occur naturally, carved millions of yearsago by erosion. (As a great deal of walking isincluded in the visit, we suggest goodwalking shoes.) The Treasury finally appearsmagnificently and immediately in front of us afterwe emerge from what seems like a hundredturns in the ravine. Now we begin ourexploration of what both the Nabateans andRomans left for us to witness. The mostadventurous will be invited to hike up to thespiritual “High Place”, site of the sacrificial alterand offering a spectacular view of the ancientcity and environs. Proceed to the Arava border
and travel north to the Dead Sea. Dinner andovernight at the Dead Sea.TUE, MAR 6 MASADA • QUMRAN •JERUSALEMThis morning we will go for a swim, rather a"float", in the salted waters of the Dead Sea.Depart for Masada, overlooking the Dead Sea,the lowest spot on Earth, where we ascend bycable car to visit the remnants of HerodsPalace and where in 73 A.D. the Zealots madetheir last stand against the might of Rome. VisitEin Gedi, fabled Spring of David, and proceedto Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrolls werefound in 1947. Its now time to “go up” toJerusalem. We will enter the city as pilgrims didsince ancient times to fulfill the words of theprophet "I was glad when they said unto me:Our feet shall stand within thy Gates, OJerusalem" (Psalms 122:1-2.) Dinner andovernight in Jerusalem.WED, MAR 7 JERUSALEMThis morning proceed to the Mt. of Olives for amagnificent view of the Old City. Take the“Palm Sunday Walk” to the Garden ofGethsemane, the Church of All Nations anddrive across the Kidron Valley. Enter the Old
City through St. Stephens Gate (Lions Gate)to the Muslim Quarter, visit the beautifulChurch of St. Anne and the Pool of Bethesda,Pilates Judgment Hall, and the Ecce HomoArch. Walk along the Via Dolorosa, into theChristian Quarter, and see the Stations of theCross. Visit Hezekiah’s Tunnel and the Pool ofSiloam. Drive to Mt. Zion to see the House ofCaiaphas and the Upper Room of the LastSupper. Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.THU, MAR 8 JERUSALEMWe will begin the day with a visit to thereconstructed Jewish Quarter, walk through theCardo, the original Roman street and see theamazing remains of the massive wall built byKing Hezekiah. Visit the Temple Institute andthe Burnt House. See the importantexcavations taking place at the Western Walland the Southern Temple Staircase. Visit theDavidson Center and archaeological park.Also visit the City of David (or the Ophel) whichwas the Jebusite city that David had conquered.Since that part of Jerusalem remained in usealmost up to current times, it is hard to find muchthat can be attributed to David. However, somebelieve that David built a citadel with his palace
just to the north outside the walls of the Jebusitecity.FRI, MAR 9 JERUSALEMStart the day with a visit the scale model ofJerusalem as it looked in the first century A.D.Proceed to Yad Vashem, Holocaust Museum.On to the Temple Mount, where Abraham wasto sacrifice Isaac. See the Dome of the Rockand alAqsa Mosque that now stand there. Endthe afternoon at Golgotha (Gordons Calvary)and the empty Garden Tomb. Special time isplanned for worship, meditation andinspiration. Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.SAT, MAR 10 JERUSALEM • BETHLEHEMProceed to the Philistine country of BetShemesh, telling the story of the Philistinesreturning the Ark to the Israelites there. Also visitBet Govrin-Maresha National Park. Mareshais one of the cities fortified by King Rehoboam (2Chron 11:8). Some believe King Herod was bornthere. It was a large city in Hellenistic andRoman times where people dug caves into thesoft rock below their house. Stop at the Valley ofElah where David slew Goliath. We will visitBethlehem and see Manger Square, theChurch of the Nativity, and view Shepherds
Fields and the Fields of Boaz and Ruth.
