Karl Schelenz founded handball in 1917. The first men's Field Handball World Championships were held in Germany in 1938. Women's handball was added to the Olympic games in 1976. The first IHF World Men's Handball Championship was in 1954 and the first IHF World Women's Handball Championship was in 1957. The first senior National Handball Championship in India was held in 1972 in Haryana. Jagat Singh Chauhan, a physical education teacher from Haryana, was the first secretary of the Handball Federation of India.
