Zafar explains to Tom the meanings of halal and haram in Islam. Halal refers to things that are permissible, while haram refers to things that are prohibited. The Quran distinguishes between the two. Zafar then discusses why Muslims do not consume blood or pork - blood contains high levels of toxic uric acid, and pigs' anatomy and biochemistry make their meat especially unhealthy for human consumption. The Islamic method of animal slaughter is also designed to drain the blood from the body quickly in order to avoid contamination of the meat.
