Haiti is located on the western third of the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean Sea between the North Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. It has a tropical climate with rainfall varying by region. The terrain is mostly mountainous, covering around 75% of the country above 600 feet. Haiti gained independence in 1804 becoming the first black-led republic in the world after a successful slave revolution. The population is over 9 million, predominantly of African descent and Catholicism is the dominant religion.
