Haiti occupies the western third of the island of Hispaniola, located between the Caribbean Sea and North Atlantic Ocean. It borders the Dominican Republic and its landscape consists of mountainous terrain divided into northern, central, and southern regions. Haiti has a history of indigenous settlement, followed by colonial rule first by Spain then France, and was the first country in Latin America and the Caribbean to gain independence via a successful slave rebellion in 1804. However, political instability and poverty have plagued the country since independence.
