Take a shoebox, fill a shoebox,
wrap a shoebox. Those were the
instructions, and 30 sea cadets
completed the mission.
Last night, they donated 28 boxes
filled with gifts for women and chil-
dren. Complete with tags “to a spe-
cial mom,” or “to a lucky little boy,”
the boxes were stuffed with every-
thing from winter gloves to teddy
bears, from body lotion to toy cars.
The boxes will go to help up to 60
families associated with one of the
two Crossroads women’s shelters,
said the YWCA’s Christmas events
co-ordinator, Kerri Boyd.
Boyd was on hand at the Peter-
borough Armouries last night to
receive the donations from mem-
bers of Peterborough’s Royal Cana-
dian Sea Cadets Corps Howe.
“This is just fantastic,” she said
when she saw the boxes, all
wrapped, bowed and tagged.
Navy League member Andrena
Finn helped plan the local out-
reach.
Her son, petty officer (first class)
Andrew-Dean Finn, 18, has been a
cadet since Grade 7.
Last night, he received a service
medal for completing four years.
“I love the discipline,” he said. He
also loves the socializing, summers
in Nova Scotia at cadet camp, and
the chance to go to the Royal Mili-
tary College to become an
orthodontist, he said.
“The cadets are Canada’s best-
kept secret,” his mother said. “They
give the kids such great experi-
ences and a chance for education.”
Three other officers received four-
year service medals: petty officer
(first class) Josh Graham, 17, of
Keene, and Peterborough’s chief
petty officer (first class) Christine
Handy, 18, and petty officer (first
class) Andrew Newby, 18.
If you would like to help women
and children at the shelter this
Christmas, call the YWCA at 743-
3526.
