TOP REASONS WHY
EMC SCALEIO
Software-Defined, Server SAN
EMC® ScaleIO® is software that creates a server-based SAN from local application
servers and storage to deliver flexible and scalable performance and capacity on
demand. It is ideal for traditional and modern applications and for those customers
evaluating OpenStack deployments.
SCALABILITY
EMC ScaleIO is designed to massively scale from three to thousands of nodes.
Whenever the need arises, additional storage and compute resources (i.e., additional
servers and/or drives) can be added modularly. Storage and compute resources grow
together or independently so storage growth is always aligned with application needs.
FLEXIBILITY
EMC ScaleIO empowers you with the flexibility to deploy a hyper-converged or a
storage-only architecture, as well as the flexibility to design your environment with
the hardware, size, operating system, and media of your choice. Hyper-converged
refers to the ability to run both your software-defined storage (SDS) services and your
applications on the same servers. Storage-only would consist of a separate set of
servers dedicated to storage and applications.
PERFORMANCE
With EMC ScaleIO, all I/O is aggregated and made accessible to any application within
the cluster. All servers participate in servicing I/O requests using massively parallel
processing. Unlike most traditional storage systems, as the number of servers grows,
so does throughput and IOPS, eliminating bottlenecks. Performance scales linearly
and cost/performance rates improve with growth. Performance optimization is
automatic; whenever rebuilds and rebalances are needed, they occur in the
background with minimal or no impact to running applications. For performance
management, manual tiering can be designed using storage pools. A designated
performance tier can be created using low-latency, high-bandwidth flash media and
low-cost spinning disks can be used to create a designated capacity tier.
ENTERPRISE GRADE
EMC ScaleIO meets and exceeds the needs of Enterprises and Service Providers. It
offers a number of Enterprise Grade features to increase Performance,
Interoperability, Monitoring, Fault Tolerance, Resiliency, and more. It provides
enterprise-grade data protection, multi-tenant capabilities, and add-on enterprise
features such as QoS, thin provisioning, and snapshots. EMC ScaleIO also offers an
extremely user friendly administrative console for easy management and
configurations.

2. ECONOMICS
Trying to predict the growth of your company is hard. If you under predict your
capacity you need to purchase more, and if you over predict you will be paying for
underutilized storage. With EMC ScaleIO, you “pay as you grow”, and therefore you do
not need to pre-pay for infrastructure you may not need. It creates a server based
SAN, so there are no dedicated storage components like fabric and HBA’s required. If
you chose to deploy in a hyper-converged infrastructure, this reduces costs of power,
cooling, hardware maintenance and floor space. Customers have seen as much as a
60% TCO savings with a hyper-converged deployment.
ELASTICITY
With ScaleIO, storage and compute resources can be increased or decreased
whenever the need arises. The system automatically rebalances data “on the fly” with
near zero downtime. Additions and removals can be done in small or large increments.
The ScaleIO system reconfigures itself as the underlying resources change; data is
rearranged and spread evenly on the servers to optimize performance and enhance
resilience. All of this happens automatically without operator intervention and
therefore eliminates the need for costly and disruptive data migrations.
RESILIENCY
When it comes to resiliency, automatically rebalancing resources and data “on the fly”
with near zero downtime is just one example of ScaleIO’s capabilities in this area.
ScaleIO provides high resiliency due its core architecture implementation and various
data protection options. The core architecture of distributed data layout (two-copy
mesh mirroring), auto-rebuild / rebalance capabilities, background device scanning,
in-flight checksum, oscillating failure detection, and instant maintenance mode are
fundamental to ensuring data is always accessible. Even during planned maintenance
windows, ScaleIO ensures you are able to maintain a highly performant and efficient
ScaleIO system. Data protection options such as protection domains, fault sets,
snapshots, and replication further enhance a customer’s capabilities for protecting
data. ScaleIO also has support for EMC Secure Remote Services (ESRS), so you can
improve problem resolution time by as much as 5x and before there is an impact to
operations.
AGNOSTIC
Since EMC ScaleIO is a software product, and therefore hardware agnostic, you can
choose/select the commodity hardware, operating system, hypervisor and media that
work best for your environment and business. Whether you are running traditional
applications (such as Oracle, SAP and Microsoft) or modern applications (including
NoSQL, Splunk, MongoDB), or are moving towards an OpenStack deployment, ScaleIO
can support you all the way.
SECURITY
With the increased agility, performance and scale provided by SDS infrastructures,
comes the need for security. ScaleIO supports Internet Protocols enabling you to
utilize IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. It also integrates with Active Directory (AD) / LDAP
providing more granular access and privileges for user roles. ScaleIO’s integration
with AD/LDAP also provide you the ability to utilize a single password authentication
system and without having to maintain a separate one for ScaleIO. It provide a secure
connection between external components (CLI, GUI, ScaleIO Gateway) and the MDM
using Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption, unauthorized and/or compromised
