Requirements:
2-3 pages (double spaced)
Essay/conversational form with introduction and conclusion
Demonstrates command of the reading and an effort to engage deeply with the reading
offers insightful commentary
Due: to be uploaded before each class.
Reading Responses are an opportunity to share your thoughts about the day’s readings. This can be accomplished in many ways, including (but not limited to)
You could start with something you liked and found interesting as an important contribution by the author, or you could start with something you disliked and critique it!
OR
You could compare and contrast the articles to each other and the day’s theme
OR
You could expand on a new concept/terminology/theory introduced in the readings.
OR
You could get inspired by one of the prompts I included in the assignment
In each posted assignment I will offer a few questions as prompts to help get you started thinking about a direction for your response, if you need it. These should not be answered individually like separate bullet points, but rather incorporated into the response. In fact, with only ~ 2 pages, if you were to answer each question you wouldn’t have space to answer any one fully.
Always aim for DEPTH over BREADTH (this is an anthropological philosophy)
Try to utilize any new terms from previous class sessions to make connections !
I would like you to put together a quick evaluation plan. Remember that you don't have to actually evaluate a program; you just have to put together a plan for its evaluation.
Remember that your program plan includes goals and objectives...how will you actually tell me if you reached your goal? How will you know if your objectives have been met? How will you know that the program you put on was delivered in such a way that will bring about success in your objectives?
These are all questions that relate to process, impact, and outcome. These are all very specific typed of evaluation that can and should be carried out in good programs. So make sure that your plan includes plans or process evaluation, impact evaluation, and outcome evaluation. It should be detailed enough that anyone could pick it up and be able to carry out your plan.
Remember all of our work on logic models, Gantt charts, and ways to visualize what you are doing... Might be a good time to use these.
And finally, we are continually being held to a greater standard of accountability for the tax-payer money that we are spending in Public Health. This is a good thing. How do we know that our program is worthwhile?

Like the Literature Review and Research Paper, the ETHNOGRAPHIC PROJECT is an “authentic assessment.” And like the previous two assignments, whenever necessary please follow proper APA citation formatting. The ETHNOGRAPHIC PROJECT asks you to complete tasks (albeit in a much abbreviated format) that anthropologists actually perform. The point of the project is to make it very clear to students how everyone’s beliefs and behaviors are culturally constructed and how the historical, social, political, and economic contexts in which people live or visit shape/influence who stays well/healthy, who gets sick, what they suffer, what their experience of illness is, how they are treated, who gets better/heals, and who does not.

Think about some of the ways in which the aging process might impact the ability to function in the world. For example, does getting from one place to the other become more complicated as we age? As we accommodate our aging bodies, do we allow more time for even short trips? Do we limit our driving and rely more on public transportation? Do we rely more on others to get us where we are going? Therefore, in the effort to create environment and living conditions that produce a society of happy, healthy people, actions must support and reinforce environmental health and enable people to adopt and maintain healthy relationship with their environment for the sake of happiness and well-being of others and the sustainability of the environment. As a conservation psychologist, I endeavor to promote positive social change through encouraging a healthy and sustainable relationship between human and nature.
Typically, comprehending and promoting the linkage between humans and the natural world greatly boost sustainable behaviors such as recycling and hence, reinforcing on environmental development and sustainability. Ideally, I chose the role of the conservation psychologist due to the fact that, people are interwoven and inseparable with the natural ecosystem. It is imperative to understand the way people experience, think about, and relate with nature in order to promote environmental sustainability and human well-being.
In my course of advocating for healthy environment and human well-being, I do not concentrate on creating small behavior changes rather, I desire for people to re-evaluate, rethink and prioritize their relationship with nature. I educate people to develop positive attitude towards environment. They need to affirm their identities and push for protection of nature and be the steward own valued places. People need to be courageous to correct their own values, systems and lifestyle through self-validation and system justification by advocating for conservation of environment, and encouraging people to participate actively, I help them understand the complex sources of environmental attitudes and behavior. Paradoxically, encouraging human well-being and ignoring on the threats to the natural environment, lead to depletion of resources, which later people complain of the adverse effects. In this regard, I encourage people to establish a connection with the environment to represent a positive image of oneself. For instance, tendering a beautiful.

Part 3
Deontology
The ethical position to do what is right out of duty or obligation. It is often called rule-based ethics.
Deontology has been described as "absolutist," "universal," and "impersonal" (Kant, 1785/1959). It prioritizes absolute obligations over consequences. In this moral framework, ethical decision making is the rational act of applying universal principles to all situations irrespective of specific relations, contexts, or consequences. This reflects Immanuel Kant's conviction that ethical decisions cannot vary or be influenced by special circumstances or relationships. Rather, a decision is "moral" only if a rational person believes the act resulting from the decision should be universally followed in all situations. For Kant, respect for the worth of all persons was one such universal principle. A course of action that results in a person being used simply as a means for others' gains would ethically unacceptable.
With respect to deception in research, from a deontological perspective, since we would not believe it moral to intentionally deceive individuals in some other context, neither potential benefits to society nor the effectiveness of participant debriefing for a particular deception study can morally justify intentionally deceiving persons about the purpose or nature of a research study. Further, deception in research would not be ethically permissible since intentionally disguising the nature of the study for the goals of research violates the moral obligation to respect each participant's intrinsic worth by undermining individuals' right to make rational and autonomous decisions regarding participation (Fisher & Fyrberg, 1994).
Utilitarianism
The ethical position depends on the consequences of the action with the goal being producing the most good.
Utilitarian theory prioritizes the consequences (or utility) of an act over the application of universal principles (Mill, 1861/1957). From this perspective, an ethical decision is situation specific and must be governed by a risk-benefit calculus that determines which act will produce the greatest possible balance of good over bad consequences. An "act utilitarian" makes an ethical decision by evaluating the consequences of an act for a given situation. A "rule utilitarian" makes an ethical decision by evaluating whether following a general rule in all similar situation would create the greater good. Like deontology, utilitarianism is impersonal: It does not take into account interpersonal and relational features of ethical responsibility. From this perspective, psychologists' obligations to those with whom they work can be superseded by an action that would produce a greater good for others (Fisher, 1999).

CHEVRON’S INFRASTRUCTURE
EVOLUTION
Chevron Corporation (www.chevron.com) is one of the world’s leading
energy companies. Chevron’s headquarters are in San Ramon, California.
The company has more than 62,000 employees and produces more than
700,000 barrels of oil per day. It has 19,500 retail sites in 84 countries. In
2012, Chevron was number three on the Fortune 500 list and had more than
$244 billion in revenue in 2011 [STAT12].
IT infrastructure is very important to Chevron and to better support all
facets of its global operations, the company is always focused on improving
its infrastructure [GALL12]. Chevron faces new challenges from increased
global demand for its traditional hydrocarbon products and the need to
develop IT support for new value chains for liquid natural gas (LNG) and the
extraction of gas and oil from shale. Huge investments are being made
around the world, particularly in Australia and Angola on massive projects of
unprecedented scale. Modeling and analytics are more important than ever
to help Chevron exploit deep water drilling and hydrocarbon extraction in
areas with challenging geographies. For example, advanced seismic imaging
tools are used by Chevron to reveal possible oil or natural gas reservoirs
beneath the earth’s surface. Chevron’s proprietary seismic imaging

technology contributed to it achieving a 69% discovery rate in
2011[CHEV12].
Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA)
Systems
Chevron refineries are continually collecting data from sensors spread
throughout the facilities to maintain safe operations and to alert operators to
potential safety issues before they ever become safety issues. Data from the
sensors is also used to optimize the way the refineries work and to identify
opportunities of greater efficiency. IT controls 60,000 valves at Chevron’s
Pascagoula, Mississippi refinery; the efficiency and safety of its end-to-end
operations are dependent on advanced sensors, supervisory control and data
acquisition (SCADA) systems, and other digital industrial control systems
[GALL12].
SCADA systems are typically centralized systems that monitor and
control entire sites and/or complexes of system.

For the Case Study assignment the current pathogen selections may be requested by sending
an email to your instructor!
Assigned Case Study Problem:
You will create a case study for a microbial infection selected from the current pathogen list. Your case
study will be assembled using a detailed rubric (see below). Upon completion, you will submit your
case study to the Blackboard gradebook in Unit 5 and to SafeAssign.
How to create a case study
The case studies are meant to be an enjoyable, interesting, and informative assignment. This is your
chance to show that you understand the key teaching points about a microbe and to communicate
these points in a written format.
What information belongs in my case study?
Have at least 3-4 key referenced points in each of the five areas shown in the Case Study Information
Chart (see below). The left-hand heading in the chart suggests the type of information requested for the
pathogen. Outlines can be in whatever form you prefer (bullets/charts/outlines/diagrams or a mix). Be
sure to include two discussion questions (and provide complete answers) that you can incorporate
into your case study (place them at the end of your write-up). These questions should help connect your
case to other material in the course. For example, what other microbes have an A-B toxin? What other
viruses are transmitted by fecal-oral spread?
How much information should I provide for my case study?
For the Case Study, you are asked to provide at least the information requested in the chart below. The
boxed questions are suggestions for the minimum amount of information within each category. The
more detailed the information, the better the study. You may consult your textbook, CDC, WHO, Access
Medicine, Google Scholar, NCBI, WebMD, etc. to find the information. For example, if you perform a
Google search using the name of the pathogen and the word ‘vaccine’, you will find information on
current vaccines (if any), those in clinical trials, vaccines used only in animals, etc.

In 2007 San Francisco began its Healthy San Francisco Plan designed to provide health care for all San Francisco citizens. In 2007, it was estimated that San Francisco had 82,000 uninsured citizens. You will submit an Economic Development Analysis and Proposal Plan, consisting of 15-20 pages, not including the title page, abstract, or reference page. In order to complete this assignment, you must choose a specific locale that you want to use for your case study. You may wish to select the community in which you currently live or a hometown as the focus of this report. A case must be a “bounded system” with definable parameters (Stake, 1995). Thus, you must choose a locale that you can define and limit. For example, you should not use New York City. Its size is far beyond what you will be able to accomplish in this course. When choosing your locale, make sure that you will be able to find demographic and economic information. The software purchase option that myIoT, Inc. should pursue would be a SaaS application. This is an Internet based service where the software is accessed online and there is no need to have it installed on site. This is a less expensive option than purchasing software and licenses, and it allows access to the outside vendors. It is also cheaper than hosted software. Based on the cloud location, the setup time is faster, which is what myIoT needs for a two-month turnaround.

Application integration would pose a challenge. Since there is a short time-frame, ensuring all partners are “up and running” could be their biggest issue. There will need to be a training period for all that access the data. Should any of their vendors not have the same capabilities, this could throw off their entire operation. Also, due to the variety of systems organizing and sharing information might be a problem. MyIot would need to work with its supply chain partners and vendors to ensure they are all capable using the chosen TMS and begin to implement it right away. This will allow extra time to make changes and enforce training sessions.

The capabilities and scope of TMS expands the software to a much more integrative system. It provides support for transportation strategic, tactical, and operational planning, as well as delivery execution, in transit visibility and performance evaluation. TMS also supports appointment scheduling, metrics monitoring, and freight bill auditing.

As a conservation psychologist, I endeavor to promote positive social change through encouraging a healthy and sustainable relationship between human and nature.
Typically, comprehending and promoting the linkage between humans and the natural world greatly boost sustainable behaviors such as recycling and hence, reinforcing on environmental development and sustainability. Ideally, I chose the role of the conservation psychologist due to the fact that, people are interwoven and inseparable with the natural ecosystem. It is imperative to understand the way people experience, think about, and relate with nature in order to promote environmental sustainability and human well-being.
In my course of advocating for healthy environment and human well-being, I do not concentrate on creating small behavior changes rather, I desire for people to re-evaluate, rethink and prioritize their relationship with nature. I educate people to develop positive attitude towards environment. They need to affirm their identities and push for protection of nature and be the steward own valued places. Deontology
The ethical position to do what is right out of duty or obligation. It is often called rule-based ethics.
Deontology has been described as "absolutist," "universal," and "impersonal" (Kant, 1785/1959). It prioritizes absolute obligations over consequences. In this moral framework, ethical decision making is the rational act of applying universal principles to all situations irrespective of specific relations, contexts, or consequences. This reflects Immanuel Kant's conviction that ethical decisions cannot vary or be influenced by special circumstances or relationships. Rather, a decision is "moral" only if a rational person believes the act resulting from the decision should be universally followed in all situations. For Kant, respect for the worth of all persons was one such universal principle. A course of action that results in a person being used simply as a means for others' gains would ethically unacceptable.
With respect to deception in research, from a deontological perspective, since we would not believe it moral to intentionally deceive individuals in some other context, neither potential benefits to society nor the effectiveness of participant debriefing for a particular deception study can morally justify intentionally deceiving persons about the purpose or nature of a research study. Further, deception in research would not be ethically permissible since intentionally disguising the nature of the study for the goals of research violates the moral obligation to respect each participant's intrinsic worth by undermining individuals' right to make rational and autonomous decisions regarding participation (Fisher & Fyrberg, 1994).
Utilitarianism
The ethical position depends on the consequences of the action with the goal being producing the most good.
Utilitarian theory prioritizes the consequences (or utility) of an act over the application of universal principles (Mill, 1861/1957). From this perspective, an ethical decision is situation specific and must be governed by a risk-benefit calculus that determines which act will produce the greatest possible balance of good over bad consequences. An "act utilitarian" makes an ethical decision by evaluating the consequences of an act for a given situation. A "rule utilitarian" makes an ethical decision by evaluating whether following a general rule in all similar situation would create the greater good. Like deontology, utilitarianism is impersonal: It does not take into account interpersonal and relational features of ethical responsibility. From this perspective, psychologists' obligations to those with whom they work can be superseded by an action that would produce a greater good for others (Fisher, 1999).

CHEVRON’S INFRASTRUCTURE
EVOLUTION
Chevron Corporation (www.chevron.com) is one of the world’s leading
energy companies. Chevron’s headquarters are in San Ramon, California.
The company has more than 62,000 employees and produces more than
700,000 barrels of oil per day. It has 19,500 retail sites in 84 countries. In
2012, Chevron was number three on the Fortune 500 list and had more than
$244 billion in revenue in 2011 [STAT12].
IT infrastructure is very important to Chevron and to better support all
facets of its global operations, the company is always focused on improving
its infrastructure [GALL12]. Chevron faces new challenges from increased
global demand for its traditional hydrocarbon products and the need to
develop IT support for new value chains for liquid natural gas (LNG) and the
extraction of gas and oil from shale. Huge investments are being made
around the world, particularly in Australia and Angola on massive projects of
unprecedented scale. Modeling and analytics are more important than ever
to help Chevron exploit deep water drilling and hydrocarbon extraction in
areas with challenging geographies. For example, advanced seismic imaging
tools are used by Chevron to reveal possible oil or natural gas reservoirs
beneath the earth’s surface. Chevron’s proprietary seismic imaging

technology contributed to it achieving a 69% discovery rate in
2011[CHEV12].
Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA)
Systems
Chevron refineries are continually collecting data from sensors spread
throughout the facilities to maintain safe operations and to alert operators to
potential safety issues before they ever become safety issues. Data from the
sensors is also used to optimize the way the refineries work and to identify
opportunities of greater efficiency. IT controls 60,000 valves at Chevron’s
Pascagoula, Mississippi refinery; the efficiency and safety of its end-to-end
operations are dependent on advanced sensors, supervisory control and data
acquisition (SCADA) systems, and other digital industrial control systems
[GALL12].
SCADA systems are typically centralized systems that monitor and
control entire sites and/or complexes of system.

You will create a case study for a microbial infection selected from the current pathogen list. Your case

How to create a case study
The case studies are meant to be an enjoyable, interesting, and informative assignment. This is your
chance to show that you understand the key teaching points about a microbe and to communicate
these points in a written format.
What information belongs in my case study?
Have at least 3-4 key referenced points in each of the five areas shown in the Case Study Information
Chart (see below). The left-hand heading in the chart suggests the type of information requested for the
pathogen. Outlines can be in whatever form you prefer (bullets/charts/outlines/diagrams or a mix). Be
sure to include two discussion questions (and provide complete answers) that you can incorporate
into your case study (place them at the end of your write-up). These questions should help connect your
case to other material in the course. For example, what other microbes have an A-B toxin? What other
viruses are transmitted by fecal-oral spread?
How much information should I provide for my case study?
For the Case Study, you are asked to provide at least the information requested in the chart below. The
boxed questions are suggestions for the minimum amount of information within each category. The
more detailed the information, the better the study. You may consult your textbook, CDC, WHO, Access
Medicine, Google Scholar, NCBI, WebMD, etc. to find the information. For example, if you perform a
Google search using the name of the pathogen and the word ‘vaccine’, you will find information on
current vaccines (if any), those in clinical trials, vaccines used only in animals, etc.

The New York City Health Bucks is a programme tailored to
cause a PSE change by distributing $2 coupons for purchasing
fresh vegetables and fruits at farmers’ market price (SNAP-Ed,
2020). The program gives financial incentives to residents and
increases their purchasing power in order to promote
consumption rates of vegetables and fruits in low-income states.
The programme changes the physical access to fresh farm
products in low productive areas. The programme transforms
the social environments in low-income areas and encourages
SNAP (Supplemental Assistance Nutrition Progra) farmers
business (Payne et al., 2013).
The programme evaluated the impact of the programme. It
aimed at assessing the extent of the behavioural change attained
among low-income residents in consumption of fresh vegetables
and fruits and market behaviours of participating farmers. The
programmes evaluated the impact on the social behaviour and
farmers’ physical environment using the SNAP-Ed Evaluation
kit developed collaboratively by Abt Associates Inc. In
conjunction with New York City management and Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, Division of Nutrition, Physical
Activity, and Obesity (CDC DNPAO). The kit consisted of set
of questions administered to the target population. The answers
collected were analysed appropriately.
The attributes evaluated included the low-income neighborhood
residents’ behavior in consuming fresh fruits and vegetables,
the perception of the residents on the importance of vegetables
and fruits in health, access and availability of the farm products
and farmers physical market.
The residents in lo income neighborhood and farmers taking
part in the SNAP were evaluated. The evaluation programmed

environment of the residents and the physical market of the
farm products studied revealed meaningful insight perceived.
As a result, the programme increased its monetary inceptive
campaigns and collaborated with many other community-based

adequate or detailed discussion of

least indicate in a brief sketch
some of the key features of the received history that we have
inherited in our current con-
ceptions of bodies. The body has been regarded as a source of
interference in, and a dan-
ger to, the operations of reaS"on. In the Cratylus, Plato claims
that the word body (soma) was
introduced by Orphic priests, who believed that man was a
spiritual or noncorporeal being
trapped in the body as in a dungeon (sema). In his doctrine of
the Forms, Plato sees mat-
ter itself as a denigrated ad imperfect version of the Idea. The
body is a betrayal of and a
prison for the soul, reason, or mind. For Plato, it was evident
that reason should rule over
the body and over the irrational or appetitive functions of the
soul. A kind of natural hier-
arcny, a self-evident ruler- ruled relation, alone makes possible
a harmony within the state,
the family, and the individual. Here we have one of the earliest
representations of the body
_eolitic. Aristotle, in continuing a tradition possibly initiated by

immortality, is derived from God
but whose body and mortality is human. The living soul is, in

and above all, a part of nature. Within Christian doctrine, it is
as an experiencing,
suffering, passionate being that generic man exists. This is why
moral characteristics were
given to various physiological disorders and why punishments
and rewards for one's soul
are administered through corporeal pleasures and punishments.
For example, in the
Middle Ages, leprosy was regarded as the diseased consequence
of lechery ad covetous-
ness, a corporeal signifier of sin.
What Descartes accomplished was not really the separation of

/ aration which had already been long anticipated in Greek
philosophy since the time of
Plato) but the separation of soul from nature. Descartes
distinguished two kinds of sub-
stances: a thinking substance (res cogitans, mind) from an
extended substance (res extensa,
body); only the latter, he believed, could be considered part of
nature, governed by its
physical laws and~ontological exigencies. The body is a self-
moving machine, a mechanical
device, functioning according to causal laws and the laws of
nature. The mind, the think-
ing substance, the soul, or consciousness, has no place in the
natural world. This exclusion
of the soul from nature, this evacuation of consciousness from
the world, is the prerequi-
site for founding a knowledge, or better, a science, of the
governing principles of nature,
a science which excludes and is indifferent to considerations of
the subj~ct. Indeed, the
impingements of subjectivity will, from Decartes's time on,
mitigate the status and value
of scientific formulations. Scientific discourse aspires to
impersonality, which it takes to be
equivalent to obje_cti!'.tty. The correlation of our ideas with the
world or the rea1ity they
~sent is a secondary function, independent of the existence of
consciousness, the pri-
mary, indubitable self-certainty of the soul. Reality can be
attained by the subject only indi-
rectly, by inference, deduction, or projection. Descartes, in
short, succeeded in linking the
mind/body opposition to the foundations of knowledge itself, a
link which places the mind
10. in a position of hierarchical superiority over and above nature,
including the nature of the
body. From that time until the present, subject or consciousness
is separated from and can
reflect on the world of the body, objects, qualities.
Dualism
Descartes instituted a dualism which three centuries of
philosophical thought have
attempted to overcome or reconcile. Dualism is the assumption
that there are two dis-
tinct, mutually exclusive and mutually exhaustive substances,
mind and body, each of
which inhabits its own self-contained sphere. Taken together the
two have incompatible
characteristics. The major problem facing dualism and all those
positions aimed at over-
coming dualism has been to explain the interactions of these
two apparently incompossi-
ble substances, given that, within experience and everyday life,
there seems to be a
manifest connection between the two in willful behavior and
responsive psychical reac-
tions. How can something that inhabits space affect or be
affected by something that is
nonspatial? How can consciousness ensure the body's
movements, its receptivity to con-
ceptual demands and requirements? How can the body inform
the mind of its needs and
wishes? How is bilateral communication possible? Dualism not
only poses irresolvable
philosophical problems; it is also at least indirectly responsible
for the historical separa-
tion _ of the natural sciences from the social sciences and

13. Tiris separation, of course, has its costs. Since the time
Descartes, not only is conscious-
ness positioned outside of the world, outside its body, outside
of nature; it is also removed
from direct contact with other minds and a sociocultural
community. At its extreme, all
that consciousness can be sure about is its own self-certain
existence. The existence of
other minds must be inferred from the apparent existence of
other bodies. If minds are
private, subjective, invisible, amenable only to first-person
knowledge, we can have no
guarantee that our inferences about other minds are in fact
justified. Other bodies may
simply be complex automata, androids or even illusions, with no
psychical interior, no
affective states or consciousness. ~onsciousness becomes, in
effect, an island unto itself. Its
relations to others, to the world, and its own body are the
consequences of mediated
judgments, inferences, and are no longer understood as direct
and unmediated.
Cartesian dualism establishes an unbridgeable gulf between
mind and matter, a gulf
most easily disavowed, however problematically, by
reductionism. To reduce either the
mind to the body or the body to the mind is to leave their
interaction unexplained,
explained away, impossible. Reductionism denies any
interaction between mind and
body, for it focuses on the actions of either one of the binary
terms at the expense of the
other. Rationalism and idealism are the results of the attempt to
explain the body and
14. matter ~ terms of mind, ideas, or reason; empiricism and
materialism are the results
of attempts to explain the mind in terms of bodily experiences
or matter (today most
commonly the mind is equated with the brain or central nervous
system). Both forms
of reductionism assert that either one or the other of the binary
terms is "really" its
opposite and can be explained by or translated into the terms of
its other.
There are not only good philosophical but also good
physiological reasons for reject-
ing reductionism as a solution to the dualist dilemma. As soon
as the terms are defined in
mutually exclusive ways, there is no way of reconciling them,
no way of understanding
their mutual influences or explaining their apparent parallelism.
Moreover, attempts to
correlate ideas or mental processes with neurological functions
have thus far failed, and
the project itself seems doomed.
Cartesian ism
There are at least three lines of investigation of the body in
contemporary thought which
may be regarded as the heirs of Cartesianism. [ ... ]
In the first line of investigation, the body is primarily regarded
as an object for the
natural sciences, particularly for the life sciences, biology and
medicine; and conversely,
the body is amenable to the humanities and social sciences,
particularly psychology
(when, for example, the discipline deals with
15. "emotions,""sensations,""experiences," and
"attitudes"), philosophy (when, for example, it deals with the
body's ontological and epis-
temological status and implications), and ethnography (where,
for example, the body's
cultural variability, its various social transformations, are
analyzed). The body either is
understood in terms of organic and instrumental functioning in
the natural sciences or is
posited as merely extended, merely physical, an object like any
other in the humanities and
social sciences. Both, in different ways, ignore the specificity
of bodies in their researches.

The more medicalized biologistic view implies a fundamental
continuity between man
and animals, such that bodies are seen to have a particularly
complex form of physiolog-
ical organization, but one that basically differs from organic
matter by degree rather than
kind. In a sense, this position is heir to the Christian concept of
the human body being
part of a natural or mundane order. As an organism, the body is
merely a more complex
version of other kinds of organic ensembles. It cannot be
qualitatively distinguished from
other organisms: its physiology poses general questions similar
to those raised by animal
physiology. The body's sensations, activities, and processes
become "lower-order" natural
16. or animal phenomena, part of an interconnected chain of organic
forms (whether under-
stood in cosmological or ecological terms). The natural sciences
tend to treat the body as
an organic system of interrelated parts, which are themselves
framed by a larger ecosys-
temic order. The humanities reduce the body to a fundamental
continuity with brute,
inorganic matter. Despite their apparent dissimilarity, they
share a common refusal to
acknowledge the distinctive complexities of organic bodies, the
fact that bodies construct
and in turn are constructed by an interior, a psychical and a
signifying view-point,
consciousness or perspective.
The second line of investigation commonly regards the body in
terms of metaphors
that construe it as an instrument, a tool, or a machine at the
disposal of consciousness,
a vessel occupied by an animating willful subjectivity. For
Locke and the liberal political '"'
tradition more generally, the body is seen as a possession, a
property of a subject, who i
thereby dissociated from carnality and makes decisions and
choices about how to dispose
of the body ad its powers (in, for example, the labor market).
Some models, including
Descartes', construe the body as a self-moving automaton, much
like a clock, car, or ship
(these are pervasive but by no means exclusive images),
according to the prevailing
modes of technology. This understanding of the body is not
unique to patriarchal philoso-
phies but underlies some versions of feminist theory which see
patriarchy as the system (
17. of universal male right to the appropriation of women's bodies
(MacKinnon, Dworkin,~
Daly, and Pateman), a position that has been strongly criticized
by other feminists (e.g.
Butler and Cornell). In many feminist political struggles (those,
for example, which uti-
lize the old slogan "get your laws off my body") which are
openly and self-consciously
about women's bodies and their control by women (e.g.
campaigns around such issues as
sexual harassment and molestation, rape, the control of fertility,
etc.), the body is typi-
cally regarded as passive and reproductive but largely
unproductive, an object over which
struggles between its "inhabitant" and others/ exploiters may be
possible. Whatever
agency or will it has is the direct consequence of animating,
psychical intentions. Its iner-
tia means that it is capable of being acted on, coerced, or
constrained by external forces.
(This is not of course to deny that there are real, and frequent,
form of abuse and coer-
cive mistreatment of women's bodies under the jealous and
mutilating hostility of some
men, but rather to suggest that frameworks within which
women's bodies must be
acknowledged as active, viable, and autonomous must be
devised so that these practices
can no longer be neatly rationalized or willfully reproduced.)
As an instrument or tool,
it requires careful discipline and training, and as a passive
object it requires subduing
and occupation. Such a view also lies behind the models of
"conditioning" and "social
construction" that are popular in some feminist circles,
especially in psychology and

As such, it is a two-way
conduit: on one hand, it is a circuit for the transmission
information from outside the
organism, conveyed through the sensory apparatus; on the other
hand, it is vehicle for the
expression of an otherwise sealed and self-contained,
incommunicable psyche. It is
through the body that the subject can express his or her
interiority, and it is through the
body that he or she can receive, code, and translate the inputs of
the "external" world.
Underlying this view too is a belief in the fundamental passivity
and transparency of the
body. Insofar as it is seen as a medium, a carrier or bearer of
information that comes from
elsewhere ( either "deep" in the subject's incorporeal interior or
from the "exterior"
world), the specificity and concreteness of the body must be
neutralized, tamed, made to
serve other purposes. If the subject is to gain knowledge about
the external world, have
any chance of making itself understood by others, or be
effective in the world on such a
model, the body must be seen as an unresistant pliability which
minimally distorts infor-
mation, or at least distorts it in a systematic and comprehensible
fashion, so that its effects
can be taken into account and information can be correctly
retrieved. Its corporeality must
be reduced to a predictable, knowable transparency; its
constitutive role in forming

a truncated steeple. If I did not take off my clothes I could
never see the inside of them,
and it will in fact be seen that my clothes may become
appendages of my body. But this
fact does not prove that the presence of my body is to be
compared to the de facto
permanence of certain objects, or the organ compared to a tool
which is always available.
It shows that conversely those actions in which I habitually
engage incorporate their
instruments into themselves and make them play a part in the
original structure of my
own body. As for the latter, it is my basic habit, the one which
conditions all the others,
and by means of which they are mutually comprehensible. Its
permanence near to me, its
26. unvarying perspective are not a de facto necessity, since such
necessity presupposes them:
in order that my window may impose upon me a point of view
of the church, it is nec-
essary in the first place that my body should impose upon me
one of the world; and the
first necessity can be merely physical only in virtue of the fact
that the second is meta-
physical; in short, I am accessible to factual situations only if
my nature is such that there
are factual situations for me. In other words, I observe external
objects with my body, I
handle them, examine them, walk round them, but my body
itself is a thing, which T do
not observe: in order to be able to do so, I should need the use
of a second body which
l_tself would be unobservable. When I say that my body is
always perceived by me, these
words are not to be taken in a purely statistical sense, for there
must be, in the way my
own body presents itself, something which makes its absence or
its variation inconceiv-
able. What can it be? My head is presented to my sight only to
the extent of my nose end
and the boundaries of my eye-sockets. I can see my eyes in
three mirrors, but they are the
eyes of someone observing, and I have the utmost difficulty in
catching my living glance
when a mirror in the street unexpectedly reflects my image back
at me. My body in the
mirror never stops following my intentions like their shadow,
and if observation consists
in varying the point of view while keeping the object fixed, then
is escapes observation
and is given to me as a simulacrum of my tactile body since it
imitates the body's actions

tainly an object as far as its parts far removed from my head are
concerned, but as we
come nearer to the eyes, it becomes divorced from objects, and
reserves among them a
quasi-space to which they have no access, and when I try to fill
this v~id _by recourse to
the image in the mirror, it refers me back to an original of the
body whic~ 1s not _out there
among things, but in my own province, on this side of all things
see~. It 1s no ~Ifference,
in spite of what may appear to be the case, with my tactile body,

hand, feel my right hand as it touches an object, the right hand

hand as it touches: the first is a system of bones, muscles and

presentation of objects in perspective cannot be understood
except through the
resistance of my body to all variation of perspective. If objects
may never show me more
than one of their facets, this is because I am myself in a certain
place from which I see
them and others, which I cannot see. If nevertheless I believe in
the existence of their hid-
den sides and equally in a world which embraces them all and
co-exists with them, I do
so insofar as my body, always present for me, and yet involved
with them in so many
objective relationships, sustains their co-existence with it and
communicates to them all
the pulse of its duration. Thus the permanence of one's own
body, if only classical psy-
29. chology had analyses it, might have led it to the body no longer
conceived as an object of
the world, but as our means of communications with it, to the
world no longer conceived
as a collection of determinate objects, but as the horizon latent
in all our experience and
itself ever-present and anterior to every and anterior to every
