counselling. Present day teachers have to occur some
specialized knowledge regarding guidance and
counselling in order to guide the students tactfully in
this highly competitive world. Let us seen detail
regarding guidance and counselling with special
referance to nursing education.
 “ A process of dynamic interpersonal relationship designed to
influence the attitudes and subsequent behaviours of a
person”. – GOOD
 “A process through which an individual is able to solve their
problems and pursue a path suited to their abilities and
aspirations”. – J.M. BREWER

 Purposes to be acheived : It should be formulated on the basis of
needs and should be communicated to all who are concerned.
 Functions to be served : After finalizing the purposes or
objectives, the next step is to determine the specific functions.
 Allocation of responsibility and authority : Establish clear cut line
of authority will help every one to distinguish his duties from those
of others.
 Appraisal of program : Appropriate measures should be taken to
rectify any noted defects in order to keep the program more
student friendly.
According to Hollis and Hollie;
 The dignity of individual is supreme.
 Each individual is different from every other individual.
 Primary concern of the guidance is the individual in his social setting.
 The attitudes and personal perceptions of individual are on the basis on he
acts.
 The individual generally acts to enhance his perceived self.
 The individual has the innate ability to learn and can be helped to make choices
that will lead to self direction consistent with social improvement.
 The individual needs continuous guidance process from early childhood
through adult hood.
 Each individual may at times need the information and personalized assistance
best given by competent professional personal.
 The main purpose of guidance committee is to “carry forward the
total guidance programme through the United effort of
management , Principal , guidance personal , teachers , parents
and students.
 Additional purposes :
 It establish and maintains policy.
 It articulate the programme between school and community.
 It acts in planning capacity.
 Helps clarify particular roles.
 Prepares ways for guidance personal.
 It serves a source of ideas and recommendations.
 “Counselling is an interaction process that facilitates
meaningful understanding of self and environment and result
in establishment and clarification of goals values for future

 “ A helping process where one person , explicitly and
purposefully gives his or her time , attention and skills to
assist a client to explore the situation,identify and act upon
solutions with in the limitations for their given environment”.
 Counseling involves two individual – counselee and
counselor.
 Mutual respect.
 Helps the individual to acquire independence and develop
sense of responsibility.
 It is more than advise giving.
 Help individual to grow up normally through guided learning.
