This document outlines the 4 main steps of involuntary mental commitment in 3 to 4 sentences each: 1. Emergency detention which can last up to 48 hours and be initiated by a peace officer, guardian, or court order. 2. Protective custody for up to 72 hours after presentment to a facility for evaluation and application for court-ordered services. 3. Temporary commitment for up to 90 days which requires a hearing and medical certificates within 14 days to determine inpatient or outpatient treatment. 4. Extended commitment for up to 12 months if the court finds the mental illness will last over 90 days and the person has been under a court order previously in the last year.
