Brickfields is known for its cultural heritage as the area where bricks were once made. It is now a popular residential area located near Kuala Lumpur Sentral transportation hub. Redevelopments in Brickfields have led to new modern architecture that contrasts with old structures. This has caused the area to lose some of its original identity as developers focus on desires for change rather than demand. Safety has also become an issue as rapid growth occurs without addressing unpleasant areas, threatening both residents and visitors.

become a favoriteplace for residence as it is a gateway tothe foremost transportation hub in the country.

In view from afar he saw that the physical
context ofthe city was a city oflight, open and
exposed to the moon. This city from what he had
understood from the locals was that this city
wasbuilt based solely on men’s desire ofchasing
a naked woman with long hair.
In accordance to the dreams, many havetried to
shape the city in a way that they wouldsomehow
bringtheir dream intoa reality so that in turn the
woman would not be ableto escape again.As
time passes, men built Zobeide as complicated as
their dreams, making the city tobe chaotic and
maze-like until trapping themselves in their own
desires andlosing their own identities. From the
travelers’ view, they would never understand the
real meaning behind the reason ofwhat draws
the residents intothis ugly, trappedcity in the first
place.

7. OBSERVING BRICKFIELDSApplying Calvino’s technique
As we stepped into this place we realizedthat in view ofthe whole city, the redevelopments of the
architectural aspects of the city is somewhat chaotic andmessy. Pictures depict a contrast between new
andold architecture where efforts ofretaining the city’s architecture façade arepresent yet futile. In
creating a new look forbrickfields (desire) the community is also losing its old identityand historical
values that defines brickfields as it is. In time, the existing structures will no longer seem fitting to the site
andthe community would notbe able topreserve what they currently have as they aresoimmersed in
their desire ofwanting a change towardswhat they think is a better city.

8. Many redevelopment activities have taken place at
Brickfields to supply the demand for modern living by
the residents. As Brickfields moving towards
modernism, it will slowly lost its cultural identity.
Blocks of massive concrete are raised across the
skyline of Brickfield, often too dominating to an
extends it took away the essence of the Brickfield
itself. Existing structures no longer seem fitting and
identity is fading.

ISSUESConclusions of the site

9. The blind people residing in the area feel safe because they are familiar with the way points of the street provided
by sectors of the community that cares. However, the ignorance of various user groups depicts the selfish acts of
individuals and their own desires to utilize public pathways as they please. This in turn, takes away the good
notion of the community that cares for the visually impaired.

10. Despite the rapid growth of luxurious office and residential buildings, Brickfields has camouflaged some unpleasant
sides behind the blocks of massive concrete. “The big issue of Brickfields is safety. Even though I just visit here for
the first time, I am worrying on my belongings too as I heard too much of incidents happening here,” a cyclist told me
during the interview. Certain “red zones” turn out to be the major problem of chasing after desire rather than demand
that threaten not only the locals themselves but also the visitors entering the site.
