❖ White erasers are made of flexible vinyl
while pink erasers are made of
synthetic rubber. In the olden days,
eraser also known as rubber in
Commonwealth countries are made
out of rubber.
Main ingredients in making erasers :
● Fillers
● Accelerators
● Curing agents
● Oils
● Synthetic rubber

10. Function of the ingredient
Use as the curing agent.
Sulfur
Accelerators
Helps the sulfur to cure the
rubber faster.
Red colouring
Used to enhance the
appearance.
Vegetable oil treated with
sulfur are also added.
Vulcanized
vegetable oil
Calcium
carbonate
Talc
Mixed with regular
vegetable oil toused as
fillers.
Prevent the erasers from
sticking to each other.

Density : 1.43 g/cm^3
Melting point : Below 1250 C.
Colour : Frequently pink.

13. MECHANICAL PROPERTIES
1. Tensile strength
• The tensile strength of rubber indicates
how much force or stress a rubber material
can withstand before breaking. The tensile
strength of rubber is typically expressed as
the amount of force in megapascals in the
range of 10-25 MPa.
2. Hardness
• Hardness is then measured in terms of of
durometer (duro) on a Shore scale. Erasers,
has a hardness of 40 duro.low 1250 C.

Rubber arrives at the eraser
factory. Mixed with pigments,
vegetable oil, pumice, sulfur, and
other ingredients that modify the
properties of the final product.
The mixture is heated, causing
the sulfur to vulcanize it,
making it more stable.

To make plugs, which will be
attached to pencils. The mixture,
in the form of a soft solid, is
forced through a die to form a
long cylinder. The cylinder is
repeatedly cut as it emerges,
forming plugs.
To make flats, which are not
attached to pencils. The
mixture, in the form of a warm
liquid, is forced into molds and
allowed to cool into a solid.
The flats are then removed
from the molds.

Plugs are shipped directly to
pencil manufacturers. They are
attached to pencils by small,
cylindrical, metal cases known as
ferrules.
Flats may be marked with the
name of the manufacturer or
other markings. May be done by
stamping, screen printing or
embossing (3D marking).
