Group 13, known as the boron family, contains elements that can be metals, nonmetals, and metalloids. Boron is a brittle, black metalloid and the only nonmetallic element in the group. Aluminum and gallium are metals that have various commercial uses - aluminum for cans, cookware, and siding, while gallium is used in computer chips despite being solid but melting in hands. Cookware made with boron can be moved directly from refrigerator to oven without cracking.
