Paintings of Hans Breeman
Since my youth I have been practicing the art of painting as a hobby. The themes of my paintings are based on the maritime history of the passenger and merchant marine. My desire is, via the Dutch merchant marine and also the English merchant marine and tug boat history, to keep the maritime history of the 50's and 60's alive. My aim is to reach the historical correctness of the maritime subjects of my paintings and to show them in spectacular environments by playing with the colors or to show them in a particular way. The two techniques I am using are painting in oils or watercolor.
Well, have a look and judge for yourself and you are of course wholeheartedly invited to give a reaction in my guestbook.
Thanks for your visit!

Lalibela: - the rock churches in and around lalibelaKeb Mathews
The rock-hewn churches of Lalibela are eleven in number and situated in three groups separated by the seasonal river Jordan. Churches of the first group are believed to have been built first and are usually visited first by many of the tourists. They are Bete Medhane-Alem, Bete Mariam, Bete Mesekel, Bete Denagel, Bete Golgotha and Bete Debre Sina. Churches of the second group are situated south of the Jordan River and comprise Bete Gabriel, Bete Amanuel, Bete Merkorios, and Bete Abba Libanos. In the third group, there is only one isolated church i.e Bete Giorgis. It is located a few minutes walk to the south west of both the first and second group of churches.
The Monastery of Ostrog is a monastery of the Serb Orthodox Church located along the almost vertical cliff, high on the mountain call Ostroska greda (beams of Ostrog) with a view of the plains Bjelopavlici. It is in north part of Montenegro near Niksic, near village Bogetici.
Ostrog Monastery is dedicated to Sveti Vasilije Ostroski – Saint Basil of Ostrog who is his founder (17th century). He was buried there, and proclaimed a saint miracle worker. His body rests in a cave in the church. The monastery was rebuilt 1923-1926 after the fire, which had been spared cave churches. They represent a major heritage value... Ostrog Monastery is the most popular pilgrimage place in Montenegro. Ostrog Monastery complex comprises two parts, the first of which, the larger lower monastery is situated around the Church of the Holy Trinity, built in 1824, containing the majority of the monastic residences, including the Dormitory.
The white, rock-hewn upper Ostrog Monastery, a tough tiny 3 km walk uphill (accessible by car also), holds two diminutive cave-churches, one of which, the Holy Cross, features some splendid rock-painted frescoes by the great seventeenth-century Serbian artists-fresco painters Jovan and Radul, depicting revered saints (including St Sava and one of St Basil), scenes from the life of Christ, and religious holidays.
The Feminist Church, the old, historic Church of St Anne Molo, IloiloFergus Ducharme
The old, historic Church of St Anne in Molo, is a must see when you visit this area of the Philippines. It is often referred to as the Feminist Church because all the statues in the church are statues of Female Saints.
The Ruins of Mater Dei in Macau, A UNESCO World Heritage Site.Fergus Ducharme
This is a fabulous testament to the work of the people of Macau and the history of the Jesuits in the Portuguese Colony. It is very interesting to see the development of the colony through the eyes of the ever expanding church in the region. The Church of Mater Dei was first built in the early 1600s along with a School and College on the site. It was an enormous complex. It survived for over 200 years before fire destroyed the Church and College, leaving only the Facade of the Church. Visiting Macau, it is a MUST SEE.

4. Göreme Open Air Museum
The Goreme Open-Air Museum resembles
a vast monastic complex composed of scores of
refectory monasteries placed side-by-side, each
with its own fantastic church. It is obviously the
first sight to be visited by any traveler in
Cappadocia, standing as it does in the very
center of the region with easy access from all
directions.
5. It is only 15 minutes walk (1.5km, 1 mile)
from Goreme village center. It contains the
finest of the rock-cut churches, with
beautiful frescoes (wall paintings) whose colors
still retain all their original freshness. It also
presents unique examples of rock hewn
architecture and fresco technique. The Goreme
Open Air Museum has been a member
ofUNESCO World Heritage List since 1984, and
was one of the first two UNESCO sites in Turkey.
6. In the 3rd century, priests with good
character changed the region into a lively centre
of Christian activity. In the 4th century
Cappadocia became known as the land of the
three saints; The Great St. Basil, Bishop of
Kayseri; his brother St. Gregory of Nyssa, and St.
Gregory of Nazianus. St. Basil founded small,
secluded settlements far away from villages and
towns.
7. Daily worship was carried out under the
supervision of a preacher. These groups were not,
however, privileged groups separated from the
community like similar communities in Egypt and
Syria. St. Basil is important in that he introduced
worship within the community in the churches of
Cappadocia. Göreme Open Air Museum is the
place where this kind of religious education was
started. The same model was then introduced in
Soğanlı, Ihlara and Açıksaray.
8. The entrance fee to the museum is 15 TL
per person. In summer, it is better to visit the
museum early in the morning or late afternoon,
instead of mid-day. There are many churches
and chapels in Goreme Open Air Museum but
the most important ones are ;
9. • St. Basil's Church (Basil Kilise)
• Apple Church (Elmali Kilise)
• St. Barbara Chapel (Azize Barbara Kilisesi)
• Snake Church
• Dark Church (Karanlik Kilise)
• St. Catherine Chapel

30. St. Catherine Chapel (Azize Catherine Şapeli)
St. Catherine chapel is between Karanlık
Church and Çarıklı Chuch and dated 11th
century. Only noa section is decorated.
According to the tale Saint Catherine saw Jesus
Christ in her dream and when she woke up she
saw the ring of Jesus on her finger. She lived in
Egypt as a Hermit and tought christianity to
many people. After she died she is announced
as a saint by the Vatikan.
34. Nunnery
The 6-7 storey rock mass to the left of the museum
entrance is known as «The Nunnery». The dining hall,
kitchen and some rooms on the first floor, together with
the ruined chapel on the second level, can still be visited.
The church on the third storey, which can be reached
through a tunnel, has a cruciform plan, a dome with four
columns and three apses.
The templon on the main apse is rarely found in
Goreme's churches. Besides the fresco of Jesus, painted
directly onto the rock, designs painted in red can also be
seen.
35. Nunnery
The different levels of the monastery are
connected by tunnels, and "millstone doors", such
as those found in the underground cities, and were
used to close off these tunnels in times of danger.
The remarkable rock-carved convent with six
stories of tunnels, corridors, stairways and
chambers. It housed as many as 300 nuns at any
one time.
