St. Barbara Chapel is a 9th century cruciform chapel decorated with simple red figures and symbols in contrast to other frescoes in Göreme. It has three apses and remnants of a storeroom, kitchen and dining hall. Frescoes painted after the 11th century use pale colors and indistinct figures, possibly by amateur artists. The chapel features symbolic figures like a locust versus crosses, a rooster versus bricks, and strange creatures interpreted as representing good versus evil. Figurative frescoes include Christ and various saints.
