A Carleton University Urban Planning Class comes to Barry's Bay and area to advise businesses on how to enhance the natural features of their main streets.
This presentation features some women architects in or from Buffalo, NY. Produced in 2011 as part of an exhibit at the Buffalo History Museum on Louise Bethune, America's first professional woman architect.
This team will be working to revitalize an alley in downtown Janesville to provide a safe walkable throughway from River St (soon to be a festival street) to the rear entries of the Milwaukee St businesses, riverwalk/pedestrian bridge, and new Town Square. This project will include an architectural entryway, benches, enclosures for current dumpsters or new solution for refuse disposal, historic pictures mounted to the rear of Milwaukee street buildings, colorful art/paint on the IBEW building, awnings, overhead lighting, architectural/ artistic features, new paving, and more.
This presentation covers a brief overview of Bonner History and the extent of the Bonner National Network. It also addresses the many resources and support systems that are in place to support Bonner campuses in their work throughout the year.

1. Greening Main Streets: Madawaska Valley
The Carleton University 2012 Project
The Project:
By invitation of the Greening Barry’s Bay Committee,
Carleton University’s Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism class on Urban Studies/Heritage
Conservation is working with the communities of Madawaska Valley Township during the Fall Term of
2012.
The first phase of this work is focused on Barry’s Bay:
The class of ten 3rd and 4th year students (plus 3 Masters level student volunteers) has been assigned
the following objectives:
• To assist the Greening Barry’s Bay initiative in identifying practical, affordable and appropriate opportunities for
enhancing the physical image (public and private buildings and spaces ) of the downtown and the community’s
entrances/exits..
• To engage the community in a discussion about Barry’s Bay’s future vision for the next 5-10 years and beyond, based
on the community’s strengths and positive attributes
2. Greening Main Streets: Madawaska Valley
The Carleton University 2012 Project
Guiding Questions:
• What is the “essence” of Madawaska Valley Township & Barry’s Bay - the “cultural heritage”
that comes from the stories contained within the lives and experiences of residents, and the
buildings and sites in and around the community, past and present ?
• What makes Madawaska Valley Township & Barry’s Bay a place where people want to live,
come to visit, and to experience?
• What are the dreams and aspirations of the community as a whole - residents - young and
older – now and for the future ?
• What challenges are facing the community? What partnerships and resources can be invited
to the project to meet those challenges and generate opportunities for the community ?
3. Greening Main Streets: Madawaska Valley
The Carleton University 2012 Project
The Visit:
October 19-21, the class spent time in Madawaska Valley Township.
They:
• Engaged two Elementary and three Madawaska Valley District High School classes in an
energetic mapping and design planning session with some 90 students.
• Held a Friday night Community Open House Meeting at the Madawaska Mountain Ski Hill
attended by approximately 100 area residents which identified ideas and opportunities for
enhancing the community.
• Photographed of Barry’s Bay’s commercial area streetscapes and the downtown’s buildings.
• Interviewed with several business owners on how to improve their business properties and
buildings.
• Held a Saturday night focus group meeting with Greening Barry’s Bay committee members
and interested participants on the future vision for the area, and key “next steps” for 2012-
2013 and beyond.
• Toured Wilno and Combermere’s heritage sites, and natural attractions and their
importance to Madawaska Valley Township.
4. Greening Main Streets: Madawaska Valley
The Carleton University 2012 Project
