The U.S. Department of State launched the Greening Diplomacy Initiative in 2009 to shrink its environmental footprint and reduce costs while promoting sustainability abroad. It aims to lead by example through its operations at over 175 locations worldwide, managed by over 58,000 employees. Key strategies include setting energy and waste reduction goals, annual sustainability planning and scorecards, green teams at embassies, and transitioning to net-zero energy new construction by 2030. The initiative strives to keep sustainability at the forefront of U.S. foreign policy.

To save the Environment, we have to first improve our economy and lead to green economy from present brown economy by the following means shown in presentation.
The world is poised to take action on climate change, and designers have a huge role to play in fostering this momentum. The Designing Climate Action class prepares for a public event on September 30th, 2015 as part of New York Climate Week 2015 to seed endeavors and create coalitions of activists, designers, scientists, and entrepreneurs designing for a positive climate future.
The HDR Regenerative Design Framework is a new way of thinking that breaks existing design paradigms and creates net positive buildings through social and ecological systems thinking.

The Water Imperative: New Standards in Corporate Water LeadershipCoro Strandberg
Water security is a top global issue. Virtually every product requires water at some point in its production, manufacturing or use. Water shortages and lack of access to clean, fresh water are two top global risks – and by 2030 global water consumption is expected to rise by 40%.
As water demand rises around the world it will be difficult for many businesses to operate as usual. Whole sectors, companies and corporate value chains depend on water for their success. WWF, RBC and Molson Coors present their thoughts on the risks and opportunities to business and how to manage them. Coro Strandberg, Strandberg Consulting, introduces guidelines to help companies become transformational corporate water leaders.
Indoor Environmental Quality: This category encourages actions that enhance indoor air quality and increase access to natural light and vistas and enhance acoustics. Those can be easily done with LEED Consultant. Such actions produce a healthy environment for living and working.

President Barack Obama instructed federal agencies to develop, implement, and annually update a strategic sustainability plan to meet energy, water, and waste reduction targets (Executive Order 13514: Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy, and Economic Performance.) Agencies are rated on Energy Management, Transportation Management, and Environmental Stewardship. The State Department consistently receives high marks in all three areas of the Office of Management and Budget’s Sustainability/Energy Scorecard related to domestic operations.Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy and Economic Performance - EXECUTIVE ORDER 13514Set energy, water, and waste reduction targets, including:30% reduction in vehicle fleet petroleum use by 202026% improvement in water efficiency by 202050% recycling and waste diversion by 201595% of all applicable contracts will meet sustainability requirementsImplementation of the 2030 net-zero-energy building requirementAnnual sustainability planAnnual sustainability and energy scorecards
Organizing itself to meet the Secretary’s challenge, the Department launched the Greening Council to coordinate capabilities across the Department to develop and disseminate far-reaching, innovative, and effective solutions.Overseeing and facilitating Department-wide policies on sustainability; Adopting best practices and incorporating employee ideas; Guiding communications strategies; Reviewing progress of efforts; and Providing a forum to elevate and share best practices on sustainability.
Greenhouse Gas Reduction GoalsThe State Department has established a greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goal of 20% by FY2020 for its domestically controlled facilities (relative to a FY2008 baseline) for emissions created by building power generation. The Department also established a greenhouse gas reduction goal of 2% for emissions from waste, energy transmission loss, and travel.Recent State Department MilestonesReduced greenhouse gas emissions from domestic buildings by 34% from FY2008 baseline.Reduced energy intensity of its headquarters by 15% since 2003; achieving Energy Star rating.Since FY2009, achieved over $18 million in energy savings performance contracts (ESPCs).Built its first domestic LEED Platinum facility along with 4 LEED Gold, 3 LEED Silver and 7 LEED certified embassies and consulates overseas, and 35 LEED projects underway.Increased number of vehicles using alternative fuels to 45% of domestic fleet.Established air- and commuter-travel teams to make employee travel more environmentally and energy efficient. In lieu of FY 2012 travel, enrolled over 60,000 trainees for online training; hosted over 33,000 digital video conferences and 1,300 web conferencing programs; and employed 209 virtual interns.
The Department’s vast portfolio, including ~20,000 buildings overseas (6 million square meters), offers a significant opportunity to implement energy efficiency strategies to deliver quick, deep, and cost effective greenhouse gas mitigation.BENCHMARKING l Since 1999, OBO has used the internationally recognized Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Green Building Rating System to guide design and construction of embassies and consulates toward the highest standards for sustainable buildings. In 2007, the U.S. Embassy in Sofia, Bulgaria became the Department’s first LEED certified building. In 2008, OBO formalized LEED certification as a requirement for new construction and major renovation projects, and raised the required achievement level to LEED Silver in 2010.
In 2012, the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia, Liberia became the Department of State’s fifth U.S. Diplomatic mission abroad to generate emissions-free power from photovoltaic panels. The Embassy has a 180 kilowatt array, which doubles as a shade structure, to provide covered parking for embassy vehicles. The installation is estimated to produce 271,956 kilowatts per year; enough to power 25 average homes.Monrovia, Liberia, has more than 200 inches of rainfall per year, but lacks a municipal water system or accessible ground water, so the U.S. Embassy there diverts rainwater into tanks that provide for nearly all of the post’s water needs—three million liters per year.
Community Housing and Energy Efficiency Forum, FOVISEE, is an NGO that provides technical assistance to low-income families by optimizing household energy saving. FOVISEE is one of the local organizations selected to participate in the @IDEAS Program that supports social projects. FOVISEE will receive funds to carry out housing refurbishment in the city of Rosario.
