Ocean Day Camp Debuts in Chatham
Chatham, NJ- Area children of all faiths (ages 4-13) are invited to explore ways we can better
care for our oceans here in the NJ northern suburbs this June. Ocean Camp at St. Paul’s Church
located next door to the Library of the Chathams offers a week long exploration through active
games, songs, science experiments, interactive storytelling and delicious snacks into the watery
world of marine science. Registration for the camp June 25-29, from 9 AM to noon, is open and
ongoing (www.stpaulschatham.org).
Campers will have a whale of a time diving into the story of Jonah the Wrong Way Prophet,
Job’s Bottom of the Sea Day, Lydia’s Purple Dye Business, Paul’s Missionary Voyages and Jesus’
story of the Pearl of Great Price. Our youngest campers will love their large ‘whale’ tent
meeting place. All will enjoy the collection of aquatic life puppets on deck for this camp as well
as the cooperative games that will help them to see that it takes people working together to
solve big, complex problems like overfishing, plastic pollution in our waters, ocean acidification
and more!
2. “We’ve lined up an all-star VBS staff for this camp. Joining us from the GreenFaith Summit area
circle are the Smiths, an experienced teaching duo, and flying north from Nashville is our camp
musician and photographer, Michaela Owens, a sophomore at the University of Evansville, IN.
Leading the younger campers will be St. Paul’s Adele Haley assisted by Chatham’s Molly
Alperowitz. In our arts area, Lorraine Basso of Chatham will be inspiring the campers in their
creativity. This is a great year to be a camper at St. Paul’s!” said director and GreenFaith Kids
Camp developer, Betsy LaVela.
For further information on the Ocean camp please contact camp director Betsy LaVela
(betsylavela@hotmail.com). Featured on the Ocean banner is the right whale, one of the
whales that can be found off the New Jersey shore. Graphic artist Terry Kole of Plymouth,
Massachusetts has been painting the graphics for the GreenFaith Kids camp series. The whale is
the first to surface! The Ocean camp is the first of two GreenFaith Kids camps being offered in
New Jersey. The second camp, Small Footprints, will be hosted by House of Prayer in Newark
this August. That zero-waste camp will help children grow in their understanding of the
importance of reducing, reusing and recycling,
