Chlorogenic acid has specifically been shown toinhibit an enzyme, glucose-6-phosphatase, thatpromotes the formation ofglucose(sugar) in
the liver.Hence, chlorogenic acid incoffeemay beresponsible, atleastin part, for thereduced risk ofglycemic disorders, like diabetes, with
long-term coffee consumption.
It may also bethesource ofcoffee’s anti-obesityeffects. Various studies have suggested that chlorogenic acid slows absorption offat fromfood
intake and alsoactivates metabolismofextra fat.Unfortunately, traditionalbrewed coffee doesn’tserveas a good sourceof chlorogenicacid.
While roasting greencoffeebeans removes its naturally bittertaste, it alsoremoves a significantportion ofchlorogenicacid. Hence, green
coffee beans remain one ofthe best naturalsources for chlorogenic acid.
The most recent study on greencoffee bean was published inJanuary 2012in the Diabetes, MetabolicSyndromeand Obesityjournal. The
researchers followed a group of16adults whosupplementedwith a special green coffee bean extract ofchlorogenic acids atdifferent dosages
(either 700 or 1050 milligrams per day) for 12weeks. All16 adults wereconsideredoverweight,as demonstratedby a BMI ofgreater than25 (a
normal BMI is between 18.5and 25).
The extract theresearchers used contained an ingredient called GCA, which contains a standardgreen coffeeextractoftotal chlorogenicacids
and other hydroxycinnamic acids thathavebeen knownto haveantioxidant health benefits. The subjects lostanaverageofalmost18 pounds–
this was 10% of theiroverallbodyweightand 4.4% oftheir overall body fat.
