Purdue Owl would be helpful as an introductory tool for first time grant writers. The
resource includes topics regarding tips for following the grantmaker’s rules, specificity in
writing, clarity in writing, making the request, and language considerations. Purdue owl
provide information on how to avoid using generalizations and absolute language in
grant writing. Examples of absolute language are all, none, never, etc. The website also
educates grant writers how to describe and justify the need, state the request clearly,
state the benefits for both parties, and to provide a path of action.

proposals and finding funders. The website provides numerous training events that are

do cost a specific price. Examples of some of the training event topics are proposal

persuasive proposals in a short(er) story format, securing a government grant, and what
are potential red flags when you are reviewing proposals.

course’s topics are gathering background information, components of a proposal,

be very helpful when writing a grant proposal as the needs statement is the heart of the

Description of Database: The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance is ran by the
General Services Administration. The website can be search by programs, agencies, or
regional agency offices. Searchable programs that are health related are environment,
agriculture, food and nutrition, consumer protection, disaster prevention and
relief/emergency preparedness, health and medical, natural resources, and youth
development. Under advanced search settings the website allows you to search based
on use of assistance, applicant eligibility, beneficiary eligibility, and deadlines. Under
the agency section the agencies are categorized in alphabetical order and includes a list
of number of offices and programs. Under the regional agency offices section lists
agencies along with the location and phone number.
Eligibility: Anyone is able to use CFDA as a searchable database for grants. The
database offers a search engine that includes 24 different eligibility requirements for

intrastate, profit organization, private nonprofit institution, small business, and
specialized groups.

Description of Database: Fundsnet is an independently owned searchable database for
grants. Fundsnet offers searchable grants in the following health related categories:
animal & wildlife, children & youth, human services, HIV/AIDS prevention, hunger and
homeless, and environmental and conservation.
Eligibility: The eligibility for Fundsnet is specific to the RFP that is searched or the
agency searched as Fundsnet is used as a database to find grants, foundations, and
philanthropy.

7. Description of Database: Grants.gov is a searchable database that is sponsored by the
United States Department of Health and Human Services. The database is used to
search grants and to track grants that an organization has already applied for.
Agriculture, community development, consumer protection, disaster prevention and
relief, environment, food and nutrition, health, humanities, and natural resources are all
categories health related that can be browsed through to search for grants. Agencies
and eligibilities can also be browsed through on the website.
Eligibility: Anyone can use the database to search grants but to apply for the grants
through the database they must register. The following eligibility requirements are
searchable on grants.gov: Government organizations, education organizations, public
housing organizations, nonprofit organizations, small businesses, and individuals.

human health and the environment. Goals the EPA specifically works towards is

management and environmental risk in all parts of society, efforts towards making
communities and ecosystems diverse, sustainable and economically productive, and

foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. The CNCS strives to use
service learning principles that supports life-long civic engagement, help rural and
economically distressed communities obtain access to public and private resources, and

Eligibility: The CNCS states that eligibility requirements vary by program. National and

Eligibility: Local units of governments, local governments, public museums, federal
government agencies, state government agencies, local government agencies, nonprofit
organizations, private operators of recreational facilities open to the public, teachers,
nature center personnel, and youth group leaders are all eligible to apply under the
specific grants offered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
Health Topics: Types of grants offered by the IDNR are land and water conservation,

welfare agency for the state of Illinois. The Agency is responsible for reducing the
number of children in foster care from 51,000 in 1997 to 15,000 currently. DCFS is
motivated to provide safe, loving homes and brighter futures for children in Illinois.
Eligibility: Public agencies, incorporated private agencies and qualified individuals are
classified as eligible to apply for grants that Illinois DCFS awards people.
Health Topics: The DCFS of Illinois consists of a safe kid’s topic that relates to the
prevention of child abuse and neglect, protecting children from domestic violence,
reporting child abuse and neglect, runaways and missing kids, substance abuse, and
health and safety tips for children. The agency also covers topics related to preserving

I. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

Description of Foundation: The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s mission is overall to
improve the quality of life for individuals. The foundation uses collaboration among
partnerships to address the health needs of the populations they serve. The foundation
also seeks to decrease poverty in underdeveloped countries.

17. Eligibility: The Agency does not fund grants directly to individuals, projects addressing
health problems in developed countries, political campaigns and legislative lobbying
efforts, building or capital campaigns, and projects that mainly serve religious purposes.
The agency grants most of its funds to nonprofit agencies.
Health Topics: The health topics that the agency funds are family planning; polio;
nutrition; polio; vaccine delivery; water, sanitation, and hygiene; and maternal,
newborn, and child health. In underdeveloped countries the agency seeks to reduce
mortality rates as the risk factors for poor maternal and child health are preventable.
For nutrition the agency is focused on reducing the incidence of under nutrition and
malnutrition in underdeveloped countries. This year the agency awarded the University
of Washington a grant to implement a global health program that addresses enteric
diseases and diarrhea that is caused by water and sanitation practices. Emory
University was also granted funds by the agency for the global health program directed
towards a global data resources used to track infectious diseases and preventable
causes of death among children under the age of 5.
Target Population: The target population of the agency is mostly underdeveloped
country populations. A lot of the populations the programs are directed towards or

racial equity, community and civic engagement, education, educated kids, healthy kids,
and secure families. The foundation works to improve the development of children and
reduce poverty levels both nationally and internationally.
Eligibility: Applicants must be qualified under the regulations of the United States
Internal Revenue Service. They do not provide funding for the operational phases of
established programs and capital requests such as the construction, purchase,
renovation, and/or furnishings of facilities. They also do not provide funding for
equipment, workshops, conferences, scholarships or tuition assistance, films, television
and/or radio programs, endowments, development campaigns, or research programs

funding. The agencies that are eligible to apply are nonprofit, public/government,

children, healthier children, and more secure families. In more detail, the foundations
wants to increase the number of children that are proficient in math and reading by the
time they reach the third grade. In order to create healthier children their focus is to
increase the number of children that are born at the healthy weight and that receive the
care and nutrition they need for optimal development. And their last main health topic
they fund for, are the efforts in increasing the number of family and children living at
least 200 percent above the poverty level.
Target Population: The target populations that the foundation funds for are people and
children living in poverty. The priority places of the foundation are Michigan,

the world, inspire moments of optimism and happiness, and create value and make a
difference.” The Foundation is the primary philanthropic arm of the company and was
registered as a 501 © (3) charitable organization. The company dispersed $98 million in
2013 to about 134 million people in 122 countries across the world. Both the company
and the philanthropic arm invest $143 million in communities globally.
Eligibility: U.S based organizations applying for grants under Coca Cola Foundation must
be tax exempt under section 501 © (3) with the IRS. The foundation however does not
fund for individuals, organizations that discriminate (based on race, color, sex, gender
identity and/or expression, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, age or disability),
religious endeavors, and political or lobbying organizations, website development,
concerts or other entertainment events, fraternal organizations and related events,
local sports or athletic teams, travel or organized field tips. They also do not fund for
marketing sponsorships, cause marketing, advertising projects, U.S based local schools
(including charter schools, pre-schools, elementary schools, middle schools, or high
schools), or organizations formed outside of the U.S that are not considered charitable
under their government laws and provisions.
Health Topics: The Coca Cola Foundation focuses on health topics related to global
water stewardship programs, fitness and nutrition efforts and community recycling
