Example:
Noted humorist and American author Mark Twain said, “To
succeed in life, you need two things: ignorance and
confidence.”
Do not use when the quote is a fact
Bad Example:
“Apollo 11 was the first mission to the moon.”
Punctuation location rules
 Use double quotes for word-for-word quotation
 “I will never forget the day the shuttle launched,” Dan said.
 In the middle of a sentence or a paragraph use a comma.
 Dan said, “I will never forget the day the shuttle launched.”
 Don’t use quotes when you summarize what someone said.
 Mr. Price, an SUU Professor, reported when students do not
pass his class it depresses him.
Quotes and MLA
 The rules usually is that closing punctuation goes in
side the quotes
 Noted humorist and American author Mark Twain
said, “To succeed in life, you need two things:
ignorance and confidence.”
 The exception is when we have an in text citation
related to the quote in MLA. Here, the period
goes after the citation.
 “It is surprising the number of people who buy frozen
vegetables at the store” (Price 47).
Block quoting
 When to use block quoting?
 If your quote is more the four lines.
 How to use it in your paper
 Indent one inch from the main margin
 Use double spacing though out the quote
 You do not need quotation marks
Block Quote incorrect
example
Have you ever sat in class waiting for your turn to
read. Just dreading that moment, kind of like
David did. “One day a substitute teacher picked
me to read aloud from the textbook. When I told
her "No, thank you," she came unhinged. She
thought I was acting smart and told me so. I kept
calm, and that got her more madder and
madder. We must have spent 10 minutes trying to
solve the problem, and finally she got so red in the
face I thought she'd blow up: She told me she'd
see me after class.” (48)
this looks right but its not.
