3. Withings Aura
3
Withings Aura, the wake up light and sound system, has
been around for a year, but a new announcement brings it
back into the spotlight. Spotify has partnered with the
connected health company to offer access to its library of
over 30 million songs.
The smart alarm uses a sensor placed in the bed to take in
data – which it then uses to make the optimal sleep and
wake environment using sound and light therapy.
The previous version of the alarm used generic music that
was researched to be effective in putting you to sleep or
waking you up, though consumers weren’t too fond of the
selections. Now with the Spotify playlist access, users can
use popular music that has those same stimulations –
often discovering new music in the process.
5. On Your Wavelength
5
This free laser and sound installation, open to
the public September 18 – October 18 in
Bankside, London, was created for the MERGE
festival by artist Marcus Lyall and scored by
sound artist Robert Thomas.
Participants can wear a headset that measures
their brain activity – and that data is then
interpreted and transmitted to the laser and
audio system, affecting the display.
The goal of the piece was to bring back an
experience of wonder and reward each user with
a unique “brain signature” generated by their
thoughts during the installation.
“With the theme of this year’s MERGE festival being ‘Interaction
and Participation’, I wanted to make something where a thought
in your head causes an actual reaction in the physical world. The
more focus you can achieve, the further you move through the
composition. By the end of the experience, you will come out with
a different mind-state to when you walked in.” – Marcus Lyall

7. The Fractal Car
7
A new kind of artist collaboration!
Sound designer and performer Amon Tobin has
partnered with French car maker Peugeot to
create perhaps one of the first sound-themed
concept cars.
The purpose of this electric car is to explore
how the sense of sound can enhance driving
using the latest tech insights. Already by 2019,
French electric cars will emit sounds to warn
pedestrians they are near – but this Fractal Car
goes even further, using sound to help drivers
remain focused and create a unique sonic
score for the entire ride. This includes
acceleration, deceleration, and opening and
closing of doors.
It’ll be unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show Sept. 17 – 27.
