Graffiti is the art of painting on walls and public surfaces with spray paint or other tools. It originated in New York in the early 1970s as a tolerated art form but is now also used by gangs to threaten violence. While illegal in most places, some cities designate legal walls where graffiti artists can paint without fear of arrest.
