Graffiti has a long history dating back to WWII when a ship inspector documented his work with his initials. In the late 1960s, Darryl McCray became the first documented "tagger" by tagging the Jackson 5's airplane. The art form grew in popularity in the 1970s with writers painting freight trains that traveled across the country. Different styles developed over time, including bubble letters and broadway style, as well as street art in the late 20th century. With increased regulation, digital techniques and new media emerged to continue the graffiti tradition. Famous street artist Shepard Fairey popularized graffiti-inspired street campaigns in the 1980s.
