POETRY
What is Poetry?
● Poetry can be defined as ‘literature in
metrical form’ or ‘ a composition forming
rythmic lines’.
● A poem is something that follows a
particular flow of rhythm and meter.
What is Poetry?
● Compared to prose, where there is no
such restriction, and the content of the
piece flows according to story, a poem
may or may not have a story, but
definitely has a structured method of
writing.
BASIC
ELEMENTS
OF POETRY
1. STANZA
● A stanza is a series of lines grouped
together in order to divide a poem; the
structure of a stanza is often (though not
always) repeated throughout the poem.
● Stanzas are separated from other
stanzas by line breaks.
● Each stanza is a standalone unit that
can either make up an entire poem or
can build a bigger poem with other
stanzas.
TYPES OF STANZA
Couplet. A stanza with two lines
Tercet. A stanza with three lines
Quatrain. A stanza with four lines
Quintain. A stanza with five lines.
Sestet. A stanza with six lines.
Septet. A stanza with seven lines.
Octave. A stanza with eight lines.
2. RHYME
● A rhyme is a repetition of vowel and
consonant sounds at the ends of
words.
EXAMPLE OF RHYME
I saw a fairy in the wood,
He was dressed all in green,
He drew his sword while I just stood,
And realized I’d be seen.
3. RHYME SCHEME
● A rhyme scheme is the ordered pattern
of rhyming words at the end of each line
of a poem.
DIFFERENT RHYME SCHEMES
● Pattern ABBA
● Pattern ABAB
● Pattern ABCD
● Pattern AABB
RHYME SCHEME EXAMPLE
(A)I saw a fairy in the wood,
(B)He was dressed all in green,

4. METER
● A meter is the pattern of beats in a line
of poetry.
● It is a combination of the number of
beats and arrangement of stresses.
