Lesson 11: Changes in the
Properties of the Materials
When Exposed to Different
Temperature DAY 1
DENNVER M. MALABAGUIO
SAN CARLOS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Day 1
Objective: Describe what
happens to the materials
when heated.
Engagement:
Review
What are some ways of
changing the physical
appearance of solid materials?
What is HEAT ?
Concepts about heat and temperature:
Heat
the quality of being hot; high
temperature.
added or external energy that causes
a rise in
temperature, expansion, evaporation,
or other physical change.
What is
TEMPERATURE?
Temperature
the degree or intensity of heat
present in a substance or object,
especially as expressed according to
a comparative scale and shown by a
thermometer or perceived by touch.
The next activity will help you describe
the changes in the properties of the
materials when they are exposed to
temperature. What do you think will
happen to the materials when they are
heated? This is what we are going to
investigate today?
What do you think will happen to the
ice cube when I put the tin can over
the flame for a few minutes?
Write your answer in the table.
Exploration: Group Activity
• Divide the class into a small
group
• Introduce Lesson 11 – Activity
1 – “What will happen to the
materials when they are
heated?”
Materials:
• tin can
• ice cubes
• candle
• matches / lighter
Prediction Observation Explanation
Guide Questions:
1. What happened to the ice cubes when
heated?
2. Is there a change in the appearance of
the material? What change took place?
3. How would you describe the change that
happened to the material when heated?
4. What happened to the material when
cooled?
Explanation:
• Have the group representative present
the result of the activity.
• Check the pupils’ responses to the
following activity questions while
discussing the activity.
Prediction Observation Explanation
The ice will
turn into
water or
liquid.
Prediction Observation Explanation
The ice will
turn into
water or
liquid.
The ice
melts
because it
is heated.
Prediction Observation Explanation
The ice will
turn into
water or
liquid.
The ice
melts
because it
is heated.
When the
material is
heated, its
temperature
increases.
Guide Questions:
1. What happened to the ice cube when
heated?
Answer: The ice cube melts.
2. Is there a change in the appearance
of the material? What change took
place?
Answer: Yes. It changes from solid to
liquid.
3. How will you describe the change
that happened to the material when
heated?
When the ice cube was heated it
change it shape, size, texture and
form.
The ice cube change it’s form into
liquid form.
•When the materials are heated,
they changed their size, shape,
and texture. They changed
their forms. When heated, the
solid materials are changed to
liquid.
Elaboration:
• How will you describe the
changes in the properties
of the materials when they
are exposed to
temperature?
Remember:
Materials may change their size,
shape, texture and form when
they are heated. When the
material is cooled down it’s
temperature is decreased (goes
down) and when heated it’s
temperature increased ( goes up).
Assessment:
Write TRUE if the statement is
correct and FALSE if it is incorrect.
_______1. When heated, the ice
cube turned into liquid.
_______2. The ice cube melts when
cooled.
_______3. The ice cube turned
into gas when exposed to heat.
_______4. When the material
cooled down, its temperature is
decreased.
_______5. When the material is
heated, its temperature is
increased.
Assignment:
Bring the following:
1 candle
2pcs. chocolate bar
2pcs. crayon
1 tin can
1 pot holder
