There have been many heated debates about how you should structure and manage your JavaScript code; specifically what module pattern to use: RequireJS or CommonJS. One's allegiance is usually determined by environment variables -- Node or the browser. As the front end world goes barreling into the future, this distinction is beginning to get blurry. Let's take an objective look at the advantages and disadvantages of each approach and have a healthy conversation as to why you would choose one over the other. Let's hug it out. Won't you join me?
The document discusses the benefits of meditation for reducing stress and anxiety. Regular meditation practice can help calm the mind and body by lowering heart rate and blood pressure. Studies have shown that meditating for just 10-20 minutes per day can have significant positive impacts on both mental and physical health over time.

o SCImago Journal Rank

Exercise
A + B + C = успешно заглавие
http://writing.markfullmer.com/academic-style-titles
Emerald
Google search.
Emerald
34. Structuring your paper
The importance of key words
Choose key words that accurately describe the content
of your article.
Remember that people search using key phrases.
Some tips:
Be descriptive
• Describe the topic and be specific – consider topic, related
research disciplines, methodology
Consider your search terms carefully
• Do not use niche, technical terms – reflect a collective
understanding of the subject. No jargon.
Repeat appropriately
• Repeat the most relevant words in the title and abstract to
increase visibility in search engines
Consider international terminology
35. Structuring your paper
The importance of the abstract
The abstract helps ‘sell’ your article
Be aware of the different audiences you need to target:
Editors
• The abstract is their first contact with your paper and they can
sometimes make a decision at that point whether or not it is
suitable for their journal.
• They may assign peer reviewers based on the abstract.
Readers (online)
• The abstract is often all a reader will see until they pay for the
article.
• Might not go further if the abstract doesn’t tell them clearly what
the paper is about.
• A good abstract should make them want to read the full-text
article.
37. Structuring your paper
The importance of the abstract
• The shop window for your
research
• Consider doing a video
abstract to complement your
paper and get your key
messages across

38. Structuring your paper
The introduction
Convince readers that you know why your work is
relevant and answer questions they might have:
– What is the problem?
– Are there any existing solutions?
– Which one is the best?
– What is its main limitation?
– What do you hope to achieve?
39. Structuring your paper
Literature review
• Quote from previous research
• What are you adding? Make it clear
• Use recent work to cite
• Self citing – only when relevant
• Any work that is not your own MUST be
referenced
• If you use your own previously
published work, it MUST be referenced
40. Structuring your paper
Method
• Indicate the main methods used
• Demonstrate that the methodology was robust, and
appropriate to the objectives.
• Focus on telling the main story, stating the main stages of
your research, the methods used, the influences that
determined your approach, why you chose particular
samples, etc. Additional detail can be given in Appendices.
41. Structuring your paper
Results
As with the methodology, focus on
the essentials; the main facts and
those with wider significance,
rather than giving great detail on
every statistic in your results.
What are the really significant
facts that emerge?
These results will feed into
your discussion of the
significance of the findings.
42. Structuring your paper
Discussion
• Consider:
– Do you provide interpretation for each of your results
presented?
– Are your results consistent with what other investigators
have reported? Or are there any differences? Why?
– Are there any limitations?
– Does the discussion logically lead to your conclusion?
• Do not
– Make statements that go beyond what the results can
support
– Suddenly introduce new terms or ideas
43. Structuring your paper
Conclusion
• Present global and specific • Summarise the paper – the
conclusions abstract is for this
• Indicate uses and extensions • Start a new topic/introduce
• Answer the original question new material
• Apply to theory and practice • Make obvious statements
• State limitations • Contradict yourself
• State implications for further
research
45. Writing tips
Avoid: Invented Terms
Do not invent new words or terms, and if you do, don’t
use them in the title or keywords
Avoid: Undefined Terms
If unfamiliar terms are necessary, always give some
explanation, as in the following definition of grounded
theory:
One of the most developed inductive research methods is that of grounded theory
... In this methodology the researcher starts with a priori constructs, inquires
deeply into organisational behaviour and gradually tests and forms theoretical
constructs.
"Grounded theory methodology and practitioner reflexivity in practitioner research"
Denis Leonard and Rodney McAdam
International Journal of Quality and Reliability Management, Vol. 18 No. 2
46. Writing tips
Avoid: Generalisations
As a rule, for the most part, generally, in general, potentially, normally, on the whole, in most cases,
usually, the vast majority of…
Avoid unless you can qualify them in some way
…contracts have tended to reinforce the position of
large community organisations, and diminish the position
of smaller organisations. For example, Ernst & Young's
(1996) study of the New Zealand Community Funding
Agency found that there was a clear concentration of
public resources in favour of large community
organisations ...
"A comparison of contracting arrangements in Australia,
Canada and New Zealand" Neal Ryan International
Journal of Public Sector Management, Vol. 12 No. 2
47. Writing tips
Avoid: Idioms and analogies
• Fit as a butcher's dog
• Speak of the Devil
• Have a lie in
• Hold your horses
• He has a chip on his shoulder
Avoid using them at all if you are unsure
48. Hand out
Writing tips
Focus on: Clear sentences
Complex - one clause is dependent on the other:
[As she had to start her essay], the [girl put down her book].
Compound - clauses linked by a conjunction
[The girl closed her book] and then [began to write her essay].
Complex and compound - (complex clause in {} and compound
clause in []):
{Even though you may not be required to publish}, a publication will
always look good on your CV, [and also get you noticed with your
peers].
49. Exercise
Writing tips
Focus on: Voice
• Active - direct, clear. A subject or ‘agent’ is the ‘doer’
of the sentence and performs an action on the ‘object’:
‘The University [agent] employs [action] researchers
[object]’.
• Passive - can depersonalise, can confuse. The object
becomes the agent of the sentence and has an action
performed on it/them:
‘Researchers [agent] are employed [action] by the
University [object]’.
51. Publication ethics
Plagiarism
• The act of taking someone else’s work and
passing it off as your own (false attribution). It is
considered fraud!
• Hard to detect with peer review but there are new
tools to help us
• Emerald’s entire portfolio is included in iThenticate
web-based software from iParadigms
http://www.ithenticate.com/
• Emerald’s Plagiarism Policy can be seen at

52. Publication ethics
Copyright
• As the author, you need to ensure that you get permission to use content you
have not created, to avoid delays, this should be done before you submit your
work
• Supply written confirmation from the copyright holder when submitting your
manuscript
• If permission cannot be cleared, we cannot republish that specific content
More information including a permissions checklist and a permissions request form

54. Polishing
Proofreading your own work
Look for:
• Incorrect grammar, spelling and
punctuation
• Flow, transition or sense problems
• Unintended typographical errors
• Accuracy of any mathematical or statistical
content
• Incomplete or inaccurate references
• Ensure consistency over your manuscript
55. Polishing
Proofreading your own work
• Know your common
mistakes
• Use, but don't rely on,
the spell checker
• Show the draft to someone
else – have a fresh pair of
eyes look at it
56. Polishing
Accurate Referencing
Why?
• Inaccuracy can lead to plagiarism cases
• An "audit trail" for your work
How?
- An in-text reference close to the source, providing
author, date and possibly page, with a list of fuller
references at the end of the work
- Footnotes or end notes with a bracketed or
superscripted number in the text and the reference at
the bottom of the page or end of the work.
Always check the guidelines on the journal
homepage
58. Dissemination and promotion
Before publication
• Develop an online presence and start
building a community:
• Build your contact base
• Use social networks to expand your
reach
• Create a website or a blog
• Leverage your professional, corporate,
and academic connections
59. Dissemination and promotion
At publication
• Spread the word effectively within your community and
help drive usage now that the work is available.
• Send an email blast to your relevant contacts
• Make the most of your publisher’s PR campaign, work
with them to develop relevant, successful marketing
messages
• Let your institutional press office know so they can
spread the word – does your institution subscribe?
• Contact those you’ve cited
60. Dissemination and promotion
After Publication
• Encourage readers to write
reviews
• Promote your video abstract
or discussion piece that can
help to draw attention to your
research
• Keep promoting your work
over social media channels:

61. Dissemination and promotion
Spread the word
Members of social networks are:
Eager to share information
Looking to collaborate
Journal content is ideal:
Up-to-date, legitimate content that is critical for
specialists in your networks
Collaboration is essential for journal production,
same as it is for Twitter, Academic.edu, LinkedIn
etc.

Editors: are busy! First contact with your paper, can decide whether or not it is suitable for the journalOften all a reader will see to entice them Might not go further if the abstract isn’t clearA good abstract might make them want to read the full-text article.
Important to establish we you are with regards to existing research in order to then explain what you are addingFigures, images and webpages all need referencing
If you have done empirical research, you need to state your methodology clearly and under a separate heading.
Examples:EfthymiosConstantinides, in "Influencing the online consumer's behaviour: the Web experience" (Internet Research, Vol. 14 No. 2), summarizes the main issues of web experience for the online consumer under the main headings which they found to be important in the literature, in such a way both researcher and practitioner can get a good idea of the main themes. In "Some moderating effects on the service quality-customer retention link" (ChaturaRanaweera and Andy Neely, International Journal of Operations & Production Management, Vol. 23 No. 2), the authors describe their results, and the statistical tests they ran, in sufficient detail to give several pages of discussion on their results.Clyde A. Warden et al., in "Service failures away from home: benefits in intercultural service encounters" (International Journal of Service Industry Management, Vol. 14 No. 4), start their discussion of results by stating what they included in the analysis – only those service failures that were equally represented in both cultural settings. The statistical tests (ANOVA, Chi-square) are discussed in relation to how they impact on the study's overall objectives. The results are linked back to the hypotheses.James U. McNeal and F. Ji Mindy, in "Children's visual memory of packaging" (Journal of Consumer Marketing, Vol. 20 No. 3), present the results of their study summarized according to relevance to visual memory. There is also an extensive discussion section.
Make sure you highlight what is different about your research/results/findings – what stands out, or is unexpected? As Emerald's philosophy is based on the idea of research into practice, most journal editors and reviewers are particularly keen on a statement of implications for the practitioner. This statement, along with one describing the implications for further research, should be within the conclusion somewhere, either within a section heading "Conclusion" or "Discussion", or in a separate section. Obviously in some cases it may not be possible to make such statements, but all research papers should state implications for research, and most papers will have implications for practice.
Avoiding invented terms in key areas such as the abstract, title and keywords is important in terms of dissemination – people discover your work by searching with keywords, and if yours are new and unknown to your readers, they won’t find it easy to find you.
Generalisations are vague and do not give a confident, informed impression – however where they are necessary, you can add detail and back your claim up with examples.
Do they actually explain what you are trying to say.? Are they universally understood or could they be lost in translation?
Complex and compound are both sentence structures that contain more than one idea or set of information. They also contain more than one clause (grammatical unit with a verb).
You can choose one for the whole paper, or a mixture (some disciplines have requirements for certain sections, such as scientific methodologies) – the important thing is that you choice the voice that serves your purpose.Things to consider:Do you want to engage the reader?Do you want to present information impartially?
Proofread and re-check at every stage – make sure you have full confidence in the accuracy of your research and how you are communicating with the reader
You can get so close to your work that it is hard to see mistakes/opportunities for improvement – get a colleague/peer to read through it and give feedback – great for spotting mistakes but also great in terms of collaboration, information sharing etc.
Give a brief overview of the advantages of using systems such as mendeley and endnote depending on your audience, and emphasise the referencing info on our site and refer to the University guide where appropriate too.
Melissa conducted an experiment in October 2011, she put her papers into the UCL repository and started blogging and tweeting and this shows the results of that, most of her papers only had 1 or 2 downloads from the repository, once she had blogged about them she had an average of 70 downloads per paper within 24 hours. The image below shows the spikes on where she tweeted about the papers.
This research piece from the PEW research centre shows the decline in print and TV as news sources compared to the rise in internet based channels such as social media, online magazines/newspapers etc. – important that you focus on getting readership from these channels.Social media also encourages collaboration, knowledge sharing and a global approach.
