Software functional testing can unveil a wide range of potential malfunctions in applications. However, there is a significant fraction of errors that will be hardly detected through a traditional testing process. Problems such as memory corruptions, memory leaks, performance bottlenecks, low-level system call failures and I/O errors might not surface any symptoms in a tester’s machine while causing disasters in production. On the other hand, many handy tools have been emerging in all popular platforms allowing a tester or an analyst to monitor the behavior of an application with respect to these dark areas in order to identify potential fatal problems that would go unnoticed otherwise. Unfortunately, these tools are not yet in widespread use due to few reasons. First, the usage of tools requires a certain amount of expertise on system internals. Furthermore, these monitoring tools generate a vast amount of data even with elegant filtering and thereby demand a significant amount of time for an analysis even from experts. As the end result, using monitoring tools to improve software quality becomes a costly operation. Another facet of this problem is the lack of infrastructure to automate recurring analysis patterns.
This paper describes the current state of an ongoing research in developing a framework that automates a significant part of the process of monitoring various quality aspects of a software application with the utilization of tools and deriving conclusions based on results. According to our knowledge this is the first framework to do this. It formulates infrastructure for analysts to extract relevant data from monitoring tool logs, process those data, make inferences and present analysis results to a wide range of stakeholders in a project.

A smarter planet starts with the innovation of smarter products. Engineering teams driving this innovation need new, collaborative ways to develop and deliver the right demands on time, on budget, and with the right quality. Rational® Workbench for Systems and Software Engineering (Workbench) software provides integrated and collaborative capabilities for such systems delivery teams.
Systems delivery is often divided into multiple categories, for example, systems engineering, project management, software engineering, and quality management. These categories interconnect across the systems delivery life cycle, performing distinct tasks and creating distinct life cycle work products. The IBM Rational Workbench for Systems and Software Engineering software is a life cycle management solution that supports such collaborative tasks and linking of the life cycle work products. The Workbench also enacts the systems delivery workflows and provides task management capabilities to effectively run the systems delivery project.

Project Brief:
Enterprise monitoring ensures the availability and performance of all the IT assets across the IT
infrastructure in Home Depot environment. System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) is used to
monitor the applications, software and hardware components availability and performance. SCOM agent
4. is deployed to all windows servers across the datacenters and stores using SCCM and all unix servers
across datacenters and stores through HP Opsware. Monitoring is setup for an application or software or
hardware component through management packs and the alerts are routed to the corresponding teams.
The Home Depot SCOM environment consists of three management groups collectively having 114
management servers monitoring 8,500 windows and 11,500 Unix/Linux computers and 1500+ URLs.
Custom management packs are written and default management packs are tuned to fulfill customer
requirements for various applications.
The SCOM generated alerts are integrated with HP Service manager and custom paging application
through SCOrch. SCOM to HPSM runbook architecture in SCOrch picks alert from SCOM, queries
enrichment database, creates ticket in HPSM, and sends Hi-Pri email through homegrown paging system.
Automations for certain alerts are configured within the SCOrch system to reduce manual effort.
