ESSAY SAMPLE 1
The first vice-president was John Adams. He once stated that the vice presidenc
y was “the most insignificant office that ever the invention of man contrived.”
Explain why John Adams might have made this statement and explain how the of
fice of the vice presidency is limited.
As vice president, John Adams was given very few duties by the Constituti
on. Vice presidents serve as the president of the Senate, but they only g
et to vote in the event of a tie. If the president dies or becomes incapacita
ted, the vice president will become the president, but besides those two j
obs, the vice president has no further official duties. John Adams likely
felt powerless to make any changes within the country, for the vice pre
sident can only truly have influence if the president wishes it to be so.
ESSAY SAMPLE 2
George Washington, in his Farewell Address, warned the American People “to
have as little political connection as possible” with foreign nations so as to
“steer clear of permanent alliances”. Over the course of American History,
do you agree or disagree that the United States has heeded President
Washington’s advice. Please give two supportive details to support your
answer.
In George Washington's Farewell Address, he recommended having as little
connection with foreign nations as possible and to steer clear of long-term
relationships with other countries. In the times following that address, our
nation has both heeded to and ignored his advice. Our nation was very much
an isolationist nation up until the bombing Pear Harbor in WWII. Following
WWII, our country has been extremely involved with other nations. While the
U.S. has not necessarily been a part of a "permanent alliance," we have been
a part of what seems to be a permanent relationship with other countries. In
places such as Afghanistan and Iraq, we have been occupying and assisting
in the formation of a democratic government there for over 25 years. While
in history our country has heeded to his advice, at the present time our
government appears to be ignoring it.
