UNH Press Release:
Senior forward Kevin Goumas (Long Beach, N.Y.) of the University of New Hampshire men's hockey
2. team was presented with the Roger A. LeClerc Award at the team's Most Valuable Player for the
2013-14 season. The announcement was made at the team awards banquet Saturday evening at the
Huddleston Hall Ballroom.
Goumas is coming off a stellar season with the Wildcats as he posted career marks in goals (19),
assists (33) and points (52). On Nov. 2, he recorded his 100th career point to become just the 71st
player in program history to enter the Century Club. On March 1, Goumas achieved yet another
milestone as he notched his 100th career assist in a four point effort to help the Wildcats to home ice
in the Hockey East quarterfinals. He is just the 16th student-athlete in program history to achieve
the 100-assist plateau. Goumas also earned the Frank "The Fan" Halbert Fan Favorite Award, named
after Frank Halbert who was the quintessential fan of all UNH athletics.
Junior forward Matt Willows (Congers, N.Y.) was named the program's 111th all-time captain at the
awards banquet for the 2014-15 season. Additionally, classmates Grayson Downing (Abbotsford,
British Columbia) and Casey Thrush (Easton, Md.) were named alternate captains.
Willows recorded career high marks in goals (18), assists (21) and in points (39) as he played in all
41 games for the 'Cats in 2013-14. He netted a team-high six game winning goals and shared the
lead for shorthanded goals (2) with Goumas. His rating of +27 was the highest by any non-
goaltender since 2002. Willows and Goumas also took home a share of the Guy Smith Award, given
annually to the team's best forward.
Downing, who missed seven games due to injury, finished his junior campaign with 22 points from
10 goals and 12 assists. He netted a pair of power play goals, one shorthanded tally and a game
winner that came on the road at Colorado College (Nov. 29).
Thrush skated in all 41 games played by UNH and tallied four goals and five assists for nine points.
He recorded the game-winning goal in a 4-1 win over Northeastern on Nov. 16.
Senior Jeff Silengo (Madison, Conn.) was presented with two awards, the SOC Nate Hardy Ironman
Award and the Warren Brown Award, presented to the best defensive forward. Despite battling
injuries throughout the course of the season, Silengo finished the year with a career high 15 points
from eight goals and seven assists. The SOC Nate Hardy Ironman Award is given in memory of Nate
Hardy, a Navy SEAL who was killed in action in Iraq in early February 2008. The award is bestowed
to the player who excels in the weight room through a 15-event competition during fall dry-land
training.
The Rod Langway Best Defenseman Award had co-recipients in senior captain Eric Knodel (West
Chester, Pa.) and junior alternate captain Trevor van Riemsdyk (Middletown, N.J.). Knodel saw a
plethora of ice time in the 41 games he skated in, compiling seven goals and 21 assists for 28 points
from the blueline. Five of his seven goals came on power plays. He finished second in the league in
scoring for defensemen. Knodel also thwarted 103 shots to lead the league. He was also the only
skater in Hockey East to tally triple-digit blocks. van Riemsdyk, who was hampered by an ankle
injury for the last half of the 2013-14 season, notched 23 points on four goals and 19 assists in his 26
games played this year. He was also the recipient of the Sid Knight Award, given to the student-
athlete with the highest grade point average. van Riemsdyk currently holds a GPA of 3.69 and was
recently inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society.
Senior defenseman Justin Agosta (East Meadow, N.Y.) received the A. Barr "Whoop" Snively
Citizenship and Service Award for the second consecutive year. The award is presented to the player
who has distinguished himself through his citizenship and service to the University and the
3. community. The award was established in 2009 by Timothy J. Churchard ('67) to honor his coach and
mentor - A. Barr Snively, who was the hockey, lacrosse and football coach at UNH from 1953-1964.
Agosta skated in all 41 games this season, recording six goals and 20 assists for 26 points, all of
which are career-high marks. He had one power play goal and two game winners.
Netminder Jeff Wyer, (Reading, Mass.) who served as an alternate captain for his senior year, was
the recipient of the Charles E. Holt Coaches Award. The honor is decided by a vote by the coaching
staff for the player who made large contributions both on and off the ice. Wyer started five of the
eight games he played in 2013-14 and garnered a record of 2-2-1. He posted a career high mark of
33 saves in a 4-1 victory over Clarkson (Oct. 11) in the season opener and earned his second win of
the season with 24 saves against Brown University (Nov. 12).
