Narrative • Main storyline focuses on the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne although each episode features a different case and the main storyline is turned into more of a reference rather than a focus. • Multi-strand narrative – different events going on. • Non-linear - there are occasional flashbacks.

Iconography • Lighting - film noir, low key lighting, very little brightness even for scenes outside – suitable for the ‘crime’ aspect of the show • Mise en scene – smart clothing (suits, skirts, blouses, dresses), police uniforms, leather jackets motifs for certain characters (Harvey Bullock and Selina Kyle) – represents their rebellious and brutish nature, lab coats (Edward Nygma) – represents the smartness and weird characteristics of the character. • Props – guns, police cars – represents the justice from the police but also the danger of the mobs.
- 6. Themes/Issues • Constant theme of revenge focuses on Oswald Cobblepot versus the mob. • Murder – each episode is consists of Jim Gordon and Harvey Bullock trying to solve a case of a unique murder. • A few sexual references – for example, Fish Mooney owns a club in the red light district.
- 7. Technical Features • Sound – non-diegetic ‘action’ music, upbeat. • Camerawork – establishing shots at the start of the episodes ( usually of the city), low angle shots of buildings of interest, close up shots to express the emotions of characters, over the shoulder shots (often used with the character of Oswald Copplepot to represent the idea he’s always being followed)
