The use of visualization and ‘glossy’ words 
of the players (celebrities) personal lives 
creates an entertaining serial and attracts 
the readers’ attention, thus boosting sales 
of the leaders (those who make the 
magazine) and brining in more readers to 
their magazine. This, however, can create 
a false representation; a shocking split or 
a rumor will still attract readers by wanting 
to know if it is true. 
The players, however, need to portray a 
representation to grow to be well known, 
even if they need to create a false rumor 
on a recent event or their popularity 
decreases with what they do. When stars 
do not attract attention by their 
representation, then they are not 
newsmakers anymore – this is called an 
expiry date. This then creates a new ideal, 
thus creating a new story for the readers 
and profit for both the leaders and the 
Stars grow great through the 
gossip, yet can loose popularity at 
the same time. 
The readers, players and leaders all run the gossip industry 
based upon their representation of the article – 
Readers use their perspective and context to affect 
interpretation and representation of the article 
Leaders create a visualization and ‘glossy’ article to 
represent a false representation 
Players need to create a representation to get noticed 
in the news and by the readers
Who is Jason? 
Why did Jason do this? 
She was pregnant? 
Did he cheat with 
teenager? 
WHOSE GETTING 
MARRIED?! 
HOW BAD WAS

They know all!!

How Social Networking effects 
celebrities 
Social network is one of the ways celebrities share their social (and some personal) 
lives to the public audience/users. 
This, however, can be taken as a way to exploit explicit celebrity (and even the publics) 
shame and to bring them down the popularity/success ladder. This can create anxiety, 
struggle and even depression towards the celebrity/public culture – making life a 
struggle for the time being.

On the other hand, social network is a way to gain publicity by doing good things – 
celebrities doing charity work, inspiring the younger audience to do good things too and 
even just enjoying themselves have positive impact on how they are represented.

The most recent exploitation of celebrity privacy 
was the the scandal of all the nude photos of 
popular celebrities. These photos of stars like 
Jennifer Lawrence, Kristen Dunst, Ariana 
Grande and many more were leaked onto the 
site 4Chan then widely spread though the site 
Reddit under the sub-Reddit ‘The Fappening’ by 
John Randall Meneses (right). 
Jennifer Lawrence’s rep comments: 
“This is a flagrant invasion of privacy. The authorities 
have been contacted and will prosecute anyone who 
posts the stolen photos of Jennifer Lawrence. 
The star has yet to make an appearance since 
the scandal.
Paparazzi 
This is another example of the 
extremities that paparazzi’s go in order 
to obtain a story. This is even more 
evident as the price people pay for 
incriminating information on these 
celebrities is high and some paparazzi 
make around £150,000 a year. 
Although they are riddled with 
controversy and criticisms, many 
celebrities need the paparazzi to 
maintain popularity and sometimes 
notoriety. Stars like Paris Hilton made 
their career by committing 
questionable acts that were all captured 
by ‘lurking’ paparazzi.
