2. Whatis GoogleI/O?
For the last several years, Google has hosted an annual developer conference in Mountain View, California: GoogleI/0.
The conference is focused on the people who design, build, and develop for Google’s platforms such as Android,
ChromeandChromeOS,APIs,GoogleWebToolkit,AppEngine, gSuiteandmore.
I/O showcases technical in-depth sessions focused on building web, mobile, and enterprise applications with Google
and open sources projects Google leverages within its platforms.
This is a highlyanticipatedconferencefor technology specialists and largely lays the groundwork for the features that
will surface in mobile apps and online for the coming year and beyond.
2018’s I/O Keynote was largely focused on how new Artificial Intelligence capabilities will play out across Google’s
product lines.
4. GoogleAI for Healthcare
The Google I/O keynote quickly
highlighted the power of Google AI,
an Artificial Intelligence engine –
powered by a new generation of
Google-designed, AI-optimized chips
- that can “bring the benefits of AI to
everyone”
The first showcase of this powerful AI
engine was image recognition,
applied to scanning and identifying
anomalies in images of human eyes.
The images, specifically the retina,
can show predictive indications of
cardiovascular risk. With a large
dataset, the AI can do this with a high
degree of accuracy. A pilot program
in India is showing great promise.
5. PredictiveAnalyticsandHealthcare
While Google’s AI is undergoing field trials
in developing countries using AI-driven
image analysis to help diagnose visually
recognizable diseases like diabetic
retinopathy, the applications of other AI
capabilities to healthcare are becoming
apparent.
In the near future, AI will augment what
healthcare professionals from technicians
to radiologists to nurses are doing
everyday— highlighting even the most
minute anomalies in large population
data sets.
Whattoexpect:Hospitals and start-ups
leveraging Google AI for large data
analysis and screening under close
human supervision
7. GoogleDigitalWellbeing
Another major health-related initiative was Google’s
announcement of their “Wellbeing” initiative, which is
designed to help create a sense of balance with our use
of mobile devices and behaviors.
The program is released as part of Android P, the newest
iteration of their mobile OS and is a setting to help draw
attention to what we are doing on our phones
8. GoogleDigitalWellbeing
Wellbeing will help users curtail their “mobile phone addiction” and
help bring order in through an alert system, dashboard, shut-down
timers, and reduction of alerts.
This effort to afford balance comes in the wake of both academic and
organizational criticism that the “addictive programming” aspects of
social media and the mechanisms of the devices themselves drive a
form of dependency on our mobile devices.
Regardless of their level of “addiction”, audiences can expect to see
these features roll-out with their new Android devices and software
updates later this year.
Whattoexpect:Moreattention in device behavior and a refocusing on
self-awareness in our consumption behavior as a trend to watch
10. NewsCuratedby GoogleAI for You
Google News is a new aggregator of news stories that are
chosen based on your website searches and interests
An evolution of their existing news and Google Now
applications, the new Google news will expanding algorithms in
behavior with artificial intelligence to choose the most relevant
and accurate articles based on many criteria
Google note specifically that their Google AI can help combat
“Fake News”, a significant problem in online content
For health brands that participate in the news cycle, content
surfacing to actively engaged patients may be less of a battle for
share of voice and attention
Whattoexpect:Trends in leveraging influencers and media
programs targeting “trusted sources” that Google AI commonly
chooses for individual users
12. GoogleWaveNet
Google’s WaveNet is text-to-speech project allowing
natural voice samples to be mapped to Google AI
resulting in a truly convincing text-to-speech
(synthesized voice) technology
When paired with Google’s Assistant this technology is
capable of truly delivering on the promise of a ”virtual
assistant” - providing reminders, making calls, and
interacting with the world on your behalf
WaveNet can provide patients with better way to manage
appointments, manage schedules, and arrange travel and
other basic services.
For the physician, WaveNet can facilitate recording
patient data and notes, capturing the mundane and
managing EHR data
Whattoexpect:Acompletely new kind of call-center
service that is completely automated and
indistinguishable from real support staff
14. GoogleLens:Creatingcontent
fromthe imagesaroundus
Google AI is also applied on mobile devices to execute image analysis from
any image captured by the camera from the Google App.
Currently, the application can convert images of text tohighlightable,
searchable text on your phone (and highlight key terms for search), images
of clothing and furniture to shopping experiences, and facilitate research
into common objects such as books.
There is a huge opportunity for patients to use this technology to better
understand their therapies, create comparisons, research, and manage their
day-to-day life by planning individual engagements through research in real-
time.
Whattoexpect:Theobjects currently recognized are the tip of the iceberg
for AI image recognition: Pill detection and identification, drug interactions
based on images of a “daily regimen”, food restrictions, the possibilities are
limitless
15. AI “Slices”
In addition to surfacing text and objects from within photographs,
I/O showed powerful demos of how machine learning can enhance
existing applications: one example was overlaying map information
onto a live street view, including notifications from stores as you
pass. On a broader scale, “slices” allow small elements of
functionality to be inserted into contexts such as search results.
Whattoexpect:Anincreasing focus on utility in the real world, and
simplicity and transparency in how that utility is delivered to users.

17. GoogleI/O Overview
• Google I/O is a showcase of what is possible using tools and technology provided by Google
• Developers and innovators will take Google’s tools and training to design and build a future state leveraging new AI
and software
• Google I/O is as much a peek into the next year or more of platform innovation—based on what was announced,
expect to see
– Broader adoption of artificial intelligence in all kinds of settings where data is plentiful
– Look for AI bots making calls, receiving calls, and managing basic human interactions via text and voice—
convincingly if not undetectably--this year
– Image recognition and inference will help people make decisions and purchases—seamlessly from their phones
– The new release of Android and Google AI will set a high bar for mobile computing
