Why Invest in Google?Goo
1. Unquestionable quality
2. Growth potential
3. Attractive valuation
1. Unquestionable quality
● Google is one of the most valuable brands in the world
● Google owns many of the most popular platforms, services, and applications
around
● The numbers look quite solid too
Andrés Cardenal. (2013)
2. Growth potential
● The U.S. online advertising industry produced $49 billion in revenue during 2014,
and this figure is expected to grow to $83 billion by 2019
● Investing in many aggressively innovative technologies such as self-driving cars,
outer space exploration, alternative energy sources, and breakthrough medical
advancements, among several others
● When being considered as a diversified group of futuristic technologies, these
projects offer far more upside potential than downside risk for investors in Google
Andrés Cardenal. (2013)
3. Attractive valuation
● Google can easily justify an above average valuation based on its rock-solid
leadership in online advertising, profitable business model, and exciting growth
prospects
● Facebook announced an explosive increase of 49% in constant currency sales
during the last quarter, so growth is not slowing down at all
● Competitive risk seems to be already accounted for in Google's current valuation
Andrés Cardenal. (2013)

Editor's Notes

  1. The company’s nature of business is a direct manifestation of this vision statement. Google’s vision statement has three variables, namely, world’s information, accessibility, and one click. Google’s mission statement is parallel to the company’s vision statement. The mission statement has four variables, namely, world’s information, organization, universal accessibility, and usefulness. Not driven by profits
  2. Why is it important for Google to be Socially responsible? What does that do for the image of the company? “We hope that by leveraging our own strengths and resources in-country, we will raise awareness of the importance of corporate philanthropy, and encourage society to participate in and contribute to the development of social responsibility”. Gives them an important stance and opinions on the society
  3. The bullet points under the overall elements follow each as an example. Link to something lean from class.
  4. Quality & potential & innovative products
  5. Apple is #1
  6. Images are from the London Office http://www.dezeen.com/2011/01/28/google-office-by-scott-brownrigg/ Architecture firm Scott Brownrigg have completed the London office of internet search engine Google, with a giant logo in the lobby forming doorways through the two Os. Perks of: unlimited free food, subsidized massages, green pastures, dog-friendly offices, Comfortable workspace
  7. Ambiguous question 360 interviewees, found brain teaser questions “discouraging otherwise qualified workers.” Many candidates feel the potential employer is treating them unfairly or settling them up for failure.
  8. Can’t compromise standard. Hiring is important, so they have strict standards. “herd effect is more powerful when the employees are smart creatives Not hierarchical and use committees. They model their hiring process like academia. Emphasize people, not organization. “The smart creatives matter more than the role; the company matters more than the manager.”
  9. Industry leader, dominate the market, but still constantly innovating. Class, Wallet and Car innovative, but they haven’t been able to gain consumer acceptance and confidence. Self driving car crashed and pulled over by
  10. Not hierarchical and use committees. They model their hiring process like academia. Emphasize people, not organization. “The smart creatives matter more than the role; the company matters more than the manager.”
  11. Google is one of the most valuable brands in the world -- the name is so powerful that many consumers use the term "Googling" for information as a synonym for online search. Only the most dominant brands on the planet enjoy this kind of presence, and Google has a market share of more than 90% in the global search market according to data from Stat Counter. In addition, Google owns many of the most popular platforms, services, and applications around. According to management, there are more than 1 billion people on Android devices around the planet, and the company paid more than $7 billion to Android developers over the last 12 months. The numbers look quite solid too: Constant-currency revenues grew 17% during the last quarter, and the business generates a big operating margin in the neighborhood of 26% of sales. Google has a pristine balance sheet with more cash and liquid investments than debt, so financial soundness is unquestionable.
  12. The U.S. online advertising industry produced $49 billion in revenue during 2014, and this figure is expected to grow to $83 billion by 2019. On a worldwide basis, digital ad spending is expected to increase from $145 billion in 2014 to a massive $253 billion by 2018. Even if Google face increased competitive pressure from smaller players in online advertising, the company will most likely remain one of the main beneficiaries from a booming online advertising industry over the years ahead. Also, the company is investing in many aggressively innovative technologies such as self-driving cars, outer space exploration, alternative energy sources, and breakthrough medical advancements, among several others. Chances are many of these projects will have little or no economic value, but some of them could offer amazing possibilities over the years. The good news is that these examples are already reflected on the company's cost structure, and Google is still a remarkably profitable business in spite of the fact that these "moon shot" projects are producing practically no revenue at all. The way I see it, when being considered as a diversified group of futuristic technologies, these projects offer far more upside potential than downside risk for investors in Google.
  13. Even the best companies can be bad investments if the price is too high. However, that's hardly the case when it comes to Google, as the online search giant trades at a very attractive valuation. No company is immune to competitive risks, and Google operates in a very dynamic environment. Chances are Facebook and other relatively younger companies will keep outgrowing Google over the middle term, although from a much smaller revenue base. The main point is that competitive risk seems to be already accounted for in Google's current valuation. At these prices Google stock is offering a pretty attractive combination of potential return versus downside risk.
  14. We all explain why Google is a great place to work at N: Perks, Freedom, Environment
