Domm Prettyface Lovee introduces herself as Dominique Erica Franklin, who goes by Domm. She is a 13-year-old choreographer and praise dancer who attends Imani Education Circle Charter School in the 8th grade. Domm describes her family, which includes her twin sister Cherry Loveable D and goddaughters Aiyanna and Taijanae.
Marva Collin'S Story
1) Marva Collins was born in 1936 in Alabama and taught in Chicago public schools for 6 years before starting her own school for low-income African American children labeled as "learning disabled."
2) She founded the Westside Preparatory School in 1975 to teach using methods she believed in, such as that all children can learn.
3) In the first year, all of her students scored at least five grades higher than in public school, convincing her that her approach worked.

They collected media like photos and videos about Christmas, Diwali, Chinese New Year and others to teach their community. The student created a VoiceThread presentation to explain their media collection, enjoying speaking aloud but finding explaining Moon Cake Festival challenging since they did not know much about it. They felt they best explained Diwali by providing a lot of information about the celebration and their religion.

Gregory Howard Williams was born in 1943 in Virginia to a middle-class family during the height of segregation. When he was around 10 years old, his abusive alcoholic father forced the family to move to Muncie, Indiana, where they learned that as mixed-race people they would be considered black under the one-drop rule. In Muncie, Williams and his brother faced discrimination, poverty, and abandonment as their father struggled with alcoholism. However, Williams remained determined to get an education and become a lawyer. He went on to receive multiple graduate degrees and serve as Dean of Ohio State University College of Law, continuing to advocate against racial discrimination.

When Abbie was 10 years old, she was part of a competition cheerleading team called Winnersville that got first place at their first competition. Starting sixth grade, Abbie was scared at first but made friends and was okay. She hopes to get a job, go to college, and have fun in life.

JT: It may be if you asked me questions. Oh, I can give you
the information that you want. Maybe better than if I just
talk.
PO: OK
JT: Cause I can talk like most women, Ya know, I may not be on
to subjects.
PO: So, Mrs. Taylor, you were born in Charlotte?
JT: In, Charlotte, I was born in Charlotte, NC uh. My father,
at the time, was professor of mathematics at what was then
Biddle University - a Presbyterian college established by
the Presbyterian Board out of Pittsburgh. It was called
the Presbyterian Church North. Uh, and uh, I went to the
public schools there until my father sent me down to
Atlanta University in high school. I think the last two
years of high school I went to Atlanta University and
completed and then on through college. But Atlanta
University was one of the schools established by the
American Missionary Association, and the purpose of the
establishment of these schools or the purpose of the
Association was to provide education for the freed slaves
and their families and children. So, uh, I finished
Atlanta University College in 1929, but I finished high
school then went on to college.
PO: Now, before you went to college, um what was Charlotte
like?
JT: Well, Charlotte, at that time, was really the largest city

JT: It may be if you asked me questions. Oh, I can give you
the information that you want. Maybe better than if I just
talk.
PO: OK
JT: Cause I can talk like most women, Ya know, I may not be on
to subjects.
PO: So, Mrs. Taylor, you were born in Charlotte?
JT: In, Charlotte, I was born in Charlotte, NC uh. My father,
at the time, was professor of mathematics at what was then
Biddle University - a Presbyterian college established by
the Presbyterian Board out of Pittsburgh. It was called
the Presbyterian Church North. Uh, and uh, I went to the
public schools there until my father sent me down to
Atlanta University in high school. I think the last two
years of high school I went to Atlanta University and
completed and then on through college. But Atlanta
University was one of the schools established by the
American Missionary Association, and the purpose of the
establishment of these schools or the purpose of the
Association was to provide education for the freed slaves
and their families and children. So, uh, I finished
Atlanta University College in 1929, but I finished high
school then went on to college.
PO: Now, before you went to college, um what was Charlotte
like?
JT: Well, Charlotte, at that time, was really the largest city
we had in NC. It was r.

Morningside Highschool • Since 1891 Morningside served the Black community of Statesville, North Carolina. • To Morningside friends and alumni it was a place of learning, a place of community and place of pride…. • Morningside was sports; extra- curriculars; EXCELLENCE…. but most importantly Morningside was home.

See we you , you could tell,ummm… the, there was a running battle almost like umm Rommel in North Africa. Every community did not…no community wanted to desegregate. They were unable to, the communities were unable to prepare for for desegregation… and they didn’t • Our community did nothing to prepare for desegregation. If I read the law saying there would be no more separate schools but there was no preparation made.
- 4. Joyce Rucker McCall and Bernita Allison
- 5. In August 1954, following the Brown decision that segregated schools were inherently unequal, Gov. William B. Umstead created the North Carolina Governor’s Special Advisory Committee on Education in response to the Brown v. Board decision. This newly formed committee developed the Pearsall Plan, which effectively kept all schools in North Carolina segregated. ”The committee feels that a compulsory mixing of the races in our schools on a statewide basis and without regard to local conditions and assignment factors other than race would alienate public support of the schools to such an extent that they could not be operated successfully.” This attempt to block integration in North Carolina lasted a full 15 years and was finally ended with the 1969 Godwin v. Johnston County Board of Education decision that reaffirmed Brown declaring the Pearsall Plan unconstitutional and requiring the full integration of Public schools in North Carolina. It felt like I was leaving home I mean all my roots everything my culture, everything I associated with was at Morningside and when I get to Statesville High like I said it..we didn’t have any representation because we didn’t meet over the summer so we didn’t have any class…. we didn’t have any of our Black students.. in any position …at the school
- 8. What was it like arriving at SHS • Skip.. You that first day and I remember the first day that uuh..uh.. I entered Statesville Highschool..umm and …we entered the school ..uhh through the front door…hehahe..uhm and people…uh that were there to certainly greet us and welcome us into the school were nice and cordial…ummhh and umm • you know the climate seemed that is was something uuhhmm that..uuhh…. was going to work out ok for us…uuhmm.. The first couple of days, the first week things were very cordial. There was not any real problems..uuuhhmm.. everything seemed to be going ok…so far..uuhh however we were still uhm very cautious …
- 9. What was it like arriving at SHS • Joyce.. Maybe about the second or third month after we got there after much turmoil after much apprehensiveness um we had what they call a student council meeting • And Skip was I guess you could say… had been chosen to be the class spokesmen for our class.. And they did an assembly….uhh It was a student council assembly and I remember distinctly nor have I ever forgotten..uuuhh…him getting up doing his speech …uhh and • It was a speech designed to help unify us regarding what was going on at that time
