Friendships are important for brain and mental health. Studies have shown that loneliness can increase stress levels and risk of disease, while social connections help build cognitive reserve and reduce dementia risk. The hypothalamus and amygdala are involved in regulating social behaviors and processing emotions. While friends are important, peer pressure should be avoided as it can lead to risky behaviors by activating the brain's reward pathway. Maintaining social connections through hobbies, volunteering or other activities is beneficial for brain wellbeing.

Self-injury, also known as self-harm, self-mutilation or cutting, is on the rise among teens. It is estimated that 1 in 200 girls between 13-19 self-harm, with over 2 million cases in the US annually, including at least 11,000 young men. Self-injury is not about suicide but rather provides relief from pain, anxiety, fear and helps the individual feel in control. Common methods include cutting, skin-picking, and burning. It is used to control emotions and provide grounding, rather than for sexual pleasure, body decoration or fitting in. People self-injure due to a lack of healthy coping mechanisms for intense emotional pain.
