Align the planning process and decisions to multiple perspectives: financial, customer, internal, and learning and growth. Blend hands-on, localized learning experiences with online class delivery, feedback and community-building. Integrate the rights of nature to co-exist into daily practice. We all benefit from active, reciprocal, respectful relationships with nature. ---Judy Schriebman 2010

Because if it isn't there, I never really lost it to begin with!”

Editor's Notes
It is a great honor to be here…to celebrate with you as we conclude the very best Sustainable Cities conference in the world! Thank you for inviting me.
“ If you’re not living on the edge, you’re taking up way too much space!” Leonard Shlain "Sit, be still, and listen, because you're drunk and we're at the edge of the roof." Rumi
Here we are on the Great Plains in the great State of Nebraska and gee, "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas any more. Now I... I know we're not in Kansas! We must be over the rainbow and into the Emerald City!
“ It's too late to be pessimistic. Really too late.” --- Yann Arthus-Bertrand
Together we have been to the Emerald City for the last few days. We have met the Wizard and realized our own abilities…and the power we have together. So, the question is: Am I a good witch, or a bad witch? I'm not a witch at all. I'm Carolyn Lenert from California, Executive Director of a new MAP.
And, we recognize in more detail, the gap between the best solutions; and that which is occurring day-to-day at home on our planning commissions and in our homes and streets. I live in a beautiful county that is 51% zoned for wildlife, ranching or recreation but that doesn't have an architect on the planning commission!
As we wind up our Meeting of The Minds 2010, we are re-charged by the journey we have taken together. And, now we are going home. I invite you to take a new MAP with you! We are leaving here with living proof that we are making a difference. And with the realizatioin that to make the changes we have to honor our hearts and brains; our courage and all our gifts.
Allow me to explain the why, what and how of a new MAP. We believe in great places to live, work, learn and play We believe that citizens, leaders, elected officials and professional planners must be effective together. We dream of more self-sufficiency as a county and, paradoxically, more inter-dependence within our neighborhoods. We want survival yes, but also stability, success and significance.
A new MAP addresses what can happen when people relate to place more consciously…in the planning department and in the community. A new MAP is a framework for closing the gap by re-imagining the planning process and community engagement. A new MAP doesn't have all the answers. We have ideas and we have questions. Join us in exploring the new territory with a new MAP.
We are all familiar with the gap between current planning processes and what individuals and communities really need from planners. Right now, our cities are large communities where people are lonesome together. We see a gap between what we know in our heads and how our hearts live in our neighborhoods.
"The philosophy that is got us into trouble is not the philosophy that is going to get us out of trouble." Wes Jackson Balanced scorecard for government. Per Alexander Pope: " Consult the Genius of the place in all. “ A higher octave of stewardship means actual guardianship and appreciation of all the elements: mineral, plant, animal, human and spirit. A new MAP can be imported to your city. We are portable and virtual.
We'll use Marin County as our model and point of departure. It's a good example with all the usual issues of water, waste, traffic, growth, diversity, open space, aging population, earthquake risks, and more.
How Does A New MAP increase the knowledge and leadership skills ? Emphasize a 360 ° , community-impact outlook for the short term and the long term Integrate community/local expertise into projects Consider financial, customer, internal, and learning and growth perspectives Incorporate practical, localized learning experiences with online class delivery, feedback and community-building Study the rights of nature and natural systems in our locale Enjoy the benefits of active, reciprocal, respectful relationships with each other and with nature.
Even with a new MAP: wherever you go, there you are!
Of course our criteria in reaching these goals are: Be Effective Address processes and procedures Build relationships Have Fun! If we're not having fun, we're not being serious!
We offer new tools and planning skills. A new MAP uses systems thinking to create synergy. Together will create a new point of view, a new way of seeing. "There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There are those who think this has already happened." --- Doug Adams - 1952-2001
Join us in exploring the new territory with a new MAP. There are many ways to follow through. Consider making a grant a a new MAP and providing scholarships to your attendees. So you’ll know from inside out that Home is not just a button on your computer.
And remember as you are going home today, there really is no place like home! Take a new MAP with you!
