  2. 2. Introduction  The director of Laurence Martin Developments, Laurence Grigorov oversees the Johannesburg, South Africa, construction and property development company. Active in his community, Laurence Grigorov contributes to organizations such as the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI). The NSRI maintains a network of 35 rescue bases across South Africa manned by approximately 900 volunteers tasked with saving lives at sea. The organization is in the news regularly for its coordinated efforts, which recently included the rescue of a stranded whale shark that beached on a sandbank in Knysna.
  3. 3. National Sea Rescue Institute  NSRI volunteers responded quickly by passing water to the shark’s mouth with buckets. Until it had recovered enough to swim away, water was pumped through the shark’s gills under the supervision of a marine expert. Once the shark reached open water, it returned to the warmer shallow waters, likely because of the cold temperatures it encountered. This made the shark vulnerable to being stranded on land again, so the animal was monitored to ensure this did not happen.
