This technical article compares a freeform optics design ('Godzilla') with a conventional optics design ('Bambi'), both having a focal length of 9.3 mm and a field size of 30 x 40 degrees. The freeform design is significantly larger and has higher distortion compared to the compact, efficient aspheric germanium lens design, which offers better image correction. Both designs excel in the infrared range of 8u-12u, with the conventional design achieving notably lower distortion.
