God created man in His image to live in paradise in the Garden of Eden. However, man disobeyed God and was tempted by the serpent to eat from the forbidden tree. This original sin resulted in mankind losing their immortality and communion with God. As a consequence of Adam's sin, all of humanity is now subject to suffering, sin, and death. God remained merciful, however, and promised a savior who would defeat sin and the devil.

GOD’S GIFT- PARADISE He created man in God’s image – image of Holiness and image of love; God breathed into man breath of life - given a soul with power to think & decide/choose He gave man immortality - represented by tree of life Man was free from sin - state of innocence, represented by nakedness – purity in the image of God’s love Stewardship of God’s creation & living in harmony with nature

10. GOD’S GIFT- MAN’S REJECTION God created man to share his friendship, goodness and holiness. (CCC 206-7); Man chooses to reject God’s gifts; (Gen. 3) Consequence of man’s disobedience: Original sin ( CCC 1707); God is merciful, with a promise of salvation. (CCC 410; Ps. 144; Gen. 3:15).

11. MAN’S REJECTION Man’s pride led him to be tempted to disobey God – “you will not die … you will be like God”, says the serpent Serpent – the role of tempter. Adam & Eve committed the First Sin, & sin entered the world They chose a life without God’s love

13. How did Adam’s sin become the sin of all his descendants? CCC404: The whole human race is in Adam “as one body of one man”. By this unity of the human race, all men are implicated in Adam’s sins. Human nature is deprived of original holiness and justice, and is transmitted down from Adam in a wounded/fallen state. It is a sin “contracted”, not “committed” - a state of condition, not an act.

15. CONSEQUENCES OF SIN First Sin resulted in human nature being “wounded” – subject to inclination to evil & sin (Original Sin). Loss of natural happiness – driven from Garden of Eden Pain & suffering came in Man has to toil for his sustenance Broken communion with God

16. God is merciful: “ After his fall, man was not abandoned by God. On the contrary, God calls him & in a mysterious way heralds the coming victory over evil & the restoration from his fall.” Genesis 3:15 tells “of a battle between the serpent & the woman, & the final victory of a descendant of hers” ( CCC 410 ). God the Creator took the role of Saviour with a promise of victory of the People of God under the leadership of Christ, the Saviour.
