A teacher of religious law asks Jesus which commandment is most important. Jesus responds that the most important commandments are to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself. The man agrees that loving God and neighbor are more important than religious sacrifices. Jesus affirms that the man understands and is close to God's kingdom. The document then shifts to discussing how to know if someone truly knows God - it says that those who love have become children of God and know God, because God is love.
